What are the best bang-for-your-buck weight gain foods for pitchers?
Here are some options with great calorie-per-dollar rankings. Practicality is also important, especially if you're a busy student shooting for 4,000-5,000+ calories per day.
My top budget-friendly choices:
Breakfast: peanut butter bagels & whole milk
Lunch/dinner: pasta & meat sauce (fattier beef)
Snacks: trail mix, PB sandwich/tortillas
Each of these can easily be pushed to 1,250-1,500 calories per meal for <$5.
With some planning, you can hit 5,000 calories for <$20/day.
Notes
✅Adding small servings of fruits/veggies is a wise addition (i.e. a handful of berries w/ breakfast, a cup of frozen veggies with lunch/dinner), but this forms a great high-calorie baseline.
Eating excess veggies or less calorie-dense foods will take up valuable real estate in your stomach, making it harder to hit the highest caloric intakes.
✅Actual caloric goals will vary based on your needs, and eating like this isn't forever.
After hitting your weight gain targets, it becomes much easier to settle into maintenance calories and focus on food quality & micronutrients (more traditional dietary advice).
✅While I needed 4,500+ to get to my target weight in HS/college (from 6'3" 155 to 215 lbs), I easily maintained after that at ~3,500, rendering most of these tips unnecessary.
Case in point: the bulking days will be over within 1-2 years if you stick to the right plan. There's light at the end of the tunnel.

We absolutely need to talk about these two 5-6-3 putouts in the @PortlandSeaDogs + @GoYardGoats game last night. 😧
SAME INNING. SAME COUNT. SAME NUMBER OF OUTS. SAME PITCH SPEED (!!!). SAME EXACT DEFLECTION AND EVERYTHING.
This is putting my brain in a PRETZEL.

For pitchers struggling with weight gain, it's not enough to "eat a lot."
One of our pros has bulked to 6'4" 181 lbs this fall (from low 170's) and recently hit a wall:
"I'm eating 4500-5000 calories a day."
My response: "Which is it?"
He admitted it was often closer to 4500, only hitting 5000 on a good day.
4500 is a lot, but in his case, it's close to his maintenance intake.
When it comes to weight gain, you don't get points for eating a lot.
My advice to him: find a way to get in 500-750 calories more than his maintenance.
This could include:
-Making existing foods extra tasty (like adding honey/Nutella to peanut butter sandwiches)
-Added ultra-dense quick calories (trail mix, light olive/avocado oil in smoothies, etc.)
-Eat minimally processed foods for the first ~3-4,000 calories, but allow himself "cheat" foods to fill the last 1-2,000.
Anyone who has tried to eat 5,000 calories consistently knows that this is a serious ask, but he has the makings of a big leaguer if he can add a couple more ticks across his arsenal.
Sometimes the suck is worth it.
