UATX is building the first steps towards a University of the Future. I'm a member of the founding class because I believe that UATX has the best chance of success. A university's mission should be to shape future citizens who will uphold and improve society. This requires intellectual integrity, historical understanding, classical wisdom, and forward thinking. The best people grasp human nature while tackling cutting-edge issues like AI, entrepreneurship, and content creation. Modern universities don't fulfill that purpose. They actively poison against creating good, civilized people. @nfergus draws the parallel between the movements in universities today, and the formation of the Third Reich in his essay "The Treason of the Intellectuals." One of the main points in the essay is the duty of the intellectual to maintain neutrality and honesty when teaching. Honesty and truth is a virtue, Aristotle's eudaimonia says that only those with exceptional character and virtue can lead a good life. Instead, modern universities teach an ideology of vitriol and victimhood, where any difference in outcome must be because of societal, or class-wide oppression, and that there's nothing that you as an individual can say or do to change that. They teach an ideology where reality is subjective, that "my truth" is the one that matters. UATX's explicit devotion to teaching and maintaining intellectual integrity, while also having the 4-year entrepreneurship focused Polaris project, and a robust, 21st century STEM program is about as close as anyone's gotten to a University of the Future. UATX is the only university I know of with a robust constitution that explicitly protects intellectual freedom, and prevents political agendization: assets-global.website-files.com/6461fa4f269388… I believe it is the tension between classical thought and cutting-edge thought that is one of UATX's biggest value points. The question that classical thought tries to answer is "What is a human being?" What makes us different from the animals? What responsibility does that give us? What is good, and what is bad? Any decision you make in building a company, or creating a product ultimately has human beings as its end. The deeper you understand human beings, the better choices you'll make. Take for example the contention around AI right now. At its core, the alignment problem is asking: "How can we make AI have human-centric virtues?" You can't answer that question unless you understand what humans are, what their values are, and what virtues are. UATX's dean and provost of Intellectual Foundations, Jacob Howland talks about the Roman god Janus, who has a face pointing backwards and a face pointing forwards. Good societies are built by those who intimately understand the past and boldly pave the future. The 1517 Fund has a different purpose (which I wholeheartedly agree with and support). It would be great if UATX and 1517 could collaborate. I've attended a 1517 summit in the past, the people I've met have a lot of overlap with UATX. There are those who absolutely could be better served by going through the Thiel fellowship, or getting a Medici grant. But the vice versa is true. Ultimately, a University should help the next generation build their greatest future selves. That starts by instilling virtue, and cultivating action.

I’m a proud cofounder and chairman of UATX; it’s time universities shaping our leaders return to enlightenment values, independent thinking, and open discourse in pursuit of truth. Honored to build alongside founders @nfergus, @bariweiss, Pano Kanelos, and amazing donors, professors, and founding students! Thank you all - we are just getting started 🚀🇺🇸🔥.

It was a pleasure to be on 60 minutes and speak about my university. We just finished our first term, and it’s been one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. The modern university is broken, new institutions must be built, and UATX is the first, but not the last.

@HannahFrankman Had a similar experience. Started homeschooling in 6th grade, spent just a few hours a day, few days a week doing actual academics (got up to graduate level mathematics courses). Rest of the time was spent learning entrepreneurship, doing projects and hanging out with friends.

I grew up homeschooled. Until 9th grade, I spent *maybe* two hours a day on school. Most of my time was spent reading, playing outside, building forts and my first little business. Turns out, those things were way more important to my adult thriving than the academics anyway.
