People saying <5x, are you actually getting deals done or just criticizing people who “overpay”?
I am not seeing any $1M+ EBITDA deals whatsoever at <5x. That is just not getting a quality business owner to sell. (Maybe adjusted pro forma w synergies, but not regular ol' LTM EBITDA.)
<5x w/ add'l potential via earnouts/structure - could see that.
Sounds nice on paper but reality is if you’re interested in growing through acquisitions and waiting for sub 5x you’d better have a very long time horizon, low burn, and extremely patient investors (as in they will wait through a cycle).

The other big negative around PE is the sheer variance in outcomes. Your whole career is going to be based on a handful of deals. Sometimes things go wrong even if you made a reasonable investment and did the right things. And even if your handful of deals goes well, other deals at the firm may not and the next fund is never a certainty.
And if you fail as a PE partner it doesn't exactly train you for a lot of other things.
It is a very high variance career.

I think pretty safe to say that investment banking is now a better risk-adjusted career path than private equity if you want to get paid top dollars early in your career Most friends I know at the Assoc and VP level in banking are making much more on a cash basis than their peers at PE firms Principals and MDs in PE are also stuck with carry that is not worth a lot in some cases. Even if it is worth something, that carry is taking much longer to vest vs 2010s when rates were effectively zero IB, on the other hand, recently raised base salaries across the board. Bonuses are real (many banks now provide ranges directly in their offer letter for full comp). Also much less dependent on 5 year outcomes on carry The only caveat is that my friends in banking hate their lives much more vs in private equity
