Three NYPD officers are unable to take down one thug at the Tremont Avenue subway stop in NYC. The thug falls or jumps down to the tracks, gets up on the other side, and walks away. They should’ve increased standards and pay instead. Drive around any US city and you'll see housing projects in the heart of town, squalid ghettos mere blocks away from the most expensive historic homes and high end businesses. That's because government uses your tax dollars to subsidize the maintenance of a criminal underclass in zip codes they could otherwise never afford, where they have no business living. Why are urban crime rates so high? Why are urban schools so bad? Why don't more young families live downtown? Section 8 housing is the answer. If we've got to give these people UBI (we don't) we could at least have the decency and practical good sense to build them their own little towns somewhere outside the heart of the city. They don't have some right to the most valuable tracts of land just because their grandmothers also grew up in that same project. They don't own the land but are recipients of public largesse in no position to argue. Bulldoze the projects, relocate their inhabitants, and sell the land for private development or build public parks and you could fix the cities overnight while increasing the tax base. Urban retardation (literal slowing, holding back) is always and everywhere a choice apparently no one is brave enough to stop making.

The reason we moved to the suburbs of Chicago when we had our first kid was for this reason. We had our cars broken into three times. That wasn’t only it. It was riding on the El very pregnant and a 20 something male not giving up his seat for me and a 60+ year old lady grabbing my arm and insisting i take her seat. It was someone being murdered above the Starbucks on Logan boulevard steps from our place and being situated the same way with the back decks to the apartment. I saw the decay happening in 2007.
