When a child is in a dysregulated state they are not choosing to have a meltdown,they are struggling to communicate how they feel.Our task is to help them regulate 1st,then validate, bring the cortex back online. Using words is ineffective when lower brain parts are disrupted🧠🌱

@gerrydiamond71 Those who behave in the most unlikeable ways are in need of the most love and support. They literally act out internal distress/ pain the only way they know how.

@DoctorPerin ☺️☺️👍👍I am a huge fan of social workers. Being able to rely on consistency amongst how staff were educated and trained matters.

I once worked in a Community Mental Health Center with a 10:1 ratio of therapists to social workers. One of my spiciest takes about the setting is that number should be reversed.

I’ve been saying “let them” for years in therapy, helping clients let go of trying to control others’ / let go of others’ opinions of them. Didn’t know was coined, and sadly, I did not publish a book on it. My bad. However, I am quite enjoying @melrobbins book.

@DoctorPerin I think you are very bright and you are posts are provocative- since yesterday, I haven’t stopped thinking about the post about “the complexity of the mind” and how we can’t simply categorize symptoms and believe our (doc’s/ therapists’) work is done. Well said.

Can we redefine mental health as a lifelong thing rather than a problem to be fixed?

Certainty/ Integrity / emotional intelligence is comforting, attractive and powerful. It can even be contagious ☺️☺️

@DoctorPerin I consistently try to model / encourage clients to reframe how they view exes/ challenging fam members / partners with more empathy and compassion - so challenging!

@NTFabiano Couldn’t agree more. Not a psychiatrist but a mental health professional and completely agree. Have all clients track cycle, know symptoms, understand connections, hold self warmly and compassionately to get needs met.

Trauma-informed psychologists like Gabor Maté downplay the role of biology and genes on neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD. He focuses almost exclusively on early childhood experiences and "bad parenting". This is really incomplete. ADHD shows very high heritability.
