Over the last year, our maths department at Blaise High School transitioned from a traditional spiral curriculum to a Year 7 mastery booklet model. As part of the @WeAreInBeta_ ‘Curriculum Thinkers Week 2026’, we are sharing our editable booklets, route map, and rationale.

@adamboxer1 Fully agree. What do TTA do in the maths department for systematic retrieval? Appreciate that’s quite a large question, but it’s something we’re needing to tackle soon.

There are lots of good articles at the moment about Do Nows/lesson starts. How do we select questions? How do we tie them to the lesson? Who should write them? How do we review them? All good questions, all good discussions. But. Fundamentally, most Do Nows don't work because the students don't know enough stuff to be able to answer the questions. They leave answers blank. They get demotivated. You try to reteach. Participation craters and energy flatlines. The time stretches and fills with...not very much. 6 questions at the start of a lesson is a hilariously tiny amount of retrieval practice. It's certainly not enough to cover any curriculum. Without a MASSIVE amount of retrieval practice outside of that, students will keep turning up and getting stuff wrong and leaving things blank. Without a systematic and comprehensive approach to retrieval practice, this will keep happening, and however sophisticated your curricular discussions about what a Do Now should look like...you're wasting your time.

@MrTaylorMaths2 I think these are great. I wonder if there is there a benefit to ordering the numbers? We don't want to introduce any unwanted misconceptions, but enables us to draw attention to mode = most occurring, not appears more than once?

Working at this school since September has changed my perception on what is possible in State education. Kids working hard every day becoming genuinely kind people. I feel very lucky to work here.
