The stories I write center on the crew of a smallish Coast Guard cutter selected for a life extension and upgrades by the Director of National Intelligence to perform sensitive and covert missions in South Florida, The Bahamas, and the Caribbean. The boat's aging engines are replaced with a new diesel-electric-battery powerplant that can provide silent propulsion for short periods of time. Her small size allows her to get close in-shore and into tight harbors and her unremarkable appearance allows her to fade into the environment. But the boat is just the background - the real stories are how the crew takes on the most difficult and dangerous missions with courage sustained by the confidence and trust they have in each other. They are more than just a team - they are more like a very tight family, who joke and jab with each other while letting no one get between them. The characters are composites of people I have known in the service, both good and bad, and the interactions, humor, and dialog are true to life (well, maybe the dialog is little cleaner 😉). The best compliment I ever had came from a reader who said that when she came to the end of the story (first book), she felt like she was leaving the crew - and it made her sad. I hope you will give the stories a try and get to know the fine people on Kauai and the adventures they face. Although there is an on-going story across the books, each stands on its own, so jump in anywhere. Enjoy the ride - Fair Winds and Following Seas!

@Super70sSports FYI. Top line scholars were addressed as "doctor" for centuries before the medical profession became more than just a sideline for barbers. If you did the work for the PhD, you've earned the honorific.

When I was a college student, I once addressed a professor as “Mister” and he condescendingly tut-tutted me and said “Doctor.” Hey, listen, unless you can save someone’s life or you’re Julius Erving, you can settle the fuck down with that energy.

An actual armed civil conflict would be the end of the U.S. The casualty rates of our last Civil War applied to today's population would be 80 million dead. It would likely be much higher, because the U.S. was largely agrarian then and starvation would obliterate the urban populations quite quickly today. In any case, as soon as we prostrated ourselves, the Russians, CCP, or both would likely nuke us out of our misery. I'm hopeful enough common sense will prevail that we can put down anyone actually trying to make this happen.

@mcahogarth Touche. In the extenuation and mitigation phase of this particular Art. 15, the "Honorverse" is not very well known outside military sci-fi Fandom. Thanks for calling my attention to it.🫡

Yes. Even if it is only for a single term of enlistment, the experience will serve them better in terms of life skills than spending their first four post-HS years at a snowflake academy. I would not have said this during the last administration, but I think the worst years are behind us.

@LtColDanRooney Nope. A commissioned officer's oath is to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the U.S. Implicit in that is faithful compliance with the lawful orders of civilian authority. The enlistment oath does include a phrase of loyalty to POTUS.

I took an oath as an officer in the United States Air Force to serve my Commander in Chief. My allegiance to that oath has not wavered in my 28 years of service. The President has endorsed another candidate in CD1 for Congress. It is not congruent with my assignments in life to actively campaign against a candidate endorsed by my Commander in Chief. I am grateful President Trump called and spoke with me personally. He was complimentary of my service to this nation and discussed other opportunities to serve within the administration. Today, I will continue serving this great nation in uniform as a commander in the Oklahoma Air National Guard and serving as the founder and CEO of Folds of Honor. To every volunteer, donor, and patriot who stood with this campaign, thank you. A special thank you to the veterans that supported and encouraged me. Your belief in this mission meant everything. Service never stops, and neither will we.

@MAGAMAHACindy I was 17 when I was sworn in and I ended up retiring after 25 years. The majority leave before retirement, usually in possession of a useful skill set and experience. Most enlist directly out of high school. What's to think about?

This happened in Feb. In a talk in DC I described the script of a dark satire I wrote about a fictional pandemic, a film meant to inoculate the public against contrived panics. All hell broke loose in the press. Opposition to -- an unproduced screenplay! I think I get it now.

Never seen anything like this in my life. Truly. A full-court press from the media against my movie project, The Rash -- still just a script! No one at Yahoo has even read it. Vaccine Skeptic RFK Jr.’s Allies Pitch Cringe Comedy on COVID Response thedailybeast.com/vaccine-skepti…

(1) First takeaway - you treat your employees like quasi-slaves; (2) happy to leave a worthy gratuity for good service, but it will be in cash, handed personally to the server so you b@st@rds can't steal it; (3) the food better be bloody good for me to come back to your snotty restaurant.

OK, we need to have a serious conversation about the next Civil War biopic/limited run series we need to have while we have the time. Jake Gyllenhaal was born to play John Bell Hood...and he's aging out of the role. We need a proper script writer, a proper telling of the man's story appropriate to his time will ... be something different, unexpected, and in a fashion--unique. I'd defer to @AmandaMilius in this regard, but I would recommend it be based off of: - John Bell Hood’s own memoirs, Advance and Retreat: Personal Experiences in the United States and Confederate States Armies. amzn.to/4eAiSmh - John Bell Hood: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of a Confederate General (Savas Beatie, 2013), by Stephen M. Hood. amzn.to/49cO0ov - John Bell Hood and the Fight for Civil War Memory (University of Tennessee Press, 2010), by Brian Craig Miller. amzn.to/4nohuWj

@rich_dalley @CynicalPublius @EithanDHaimMD Hubris. The same issue has been around since Benedict Arnold. Not sure a treason charge is appropriate given limits in the Constitution. However, pulling Kelly's security clearance is a no-brainer at this point.

@CynicalPublius @EithanDHaimMD I have never served in the military. But could you explain to people how a person's military service can be admirable, but those same people can become traitors. The average person can't comprehend how that is possible.

Allow me to explain the difference between a Loyal American and Senator Mark Kelly (D-Sedition). When confronted by "journalist" Margaret Brennan, a Loyal American says the following: "Margaret, I can neither confirm nor deny the stock status of America's most sophisticated precision munitions. That information is classified, and I am therefore duty bound to not publicly divulge such information. Know this, however: we in the Senate are working closely with the Department of War to protect America's national security." But Senator Mark Kelly (D-Sedition) instead decided to say this about our sophisticated precision munitions: ". . . it’s shocking how deep we have gone into these magazines.” Prosecute.
Face The Nation@FaceTheNation

Senate Armed Services Committee member Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) says the Pentagon has updated lawmakers on how many attack missiles and interceptor rounds have been fired off since the start of the war with Iran, and he says “it’s shocking how deep we have gone into these magazines.” “We've expended a lot of munitions, and that means the American people are less safe, whether it's a conflict in the western Pacific with China or somewhere else in the world, the munitions are depleted,” he tells @margbrennan.
