Quite the spectacle: voices who've cheered on austerity saying 'oh god, SEND spending is out of control'. If you gut councils, fail to provide local special school spaces, collapse SureStart and leave public/collective transport to rot, that's what happens. Cuts are expensive

For the first time in ages, autism is front and centre in the media. But it’s about poxy paracetamol and nonsensical causative links. In the meantime, my 4 and a half year old who can’t say a word and only understands a handful of words is told he probably won’t get into an autism class when he starts school next year. He won’t survive a day in mainstream school. That’s happening all over the country, because we are a rich country with third world services for our most vulnerable children. But there will be little to no interest in that today in the media or on Twitter. Just the paracetamol.

Interesting conclusions of this meta-analysis: Incidental L2 #vocabulary learning gains were similar across reading, listening, and reading while listening, but the proportion of words learned thru viewing was much smaller. (Webb et al 2023) cambridge.org/core/services/…

“The analysis also indicated that the use of first language (L1) translation in teacher speech increased the chances that target words were written in notes, and that writing words in notes was the most effective predictor of learning.” journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…
