Maritime security requires cooperation. At #EuropeanOceanDays, we joined partners from coast guards and EU agencies to discuss how stronger coordination, shared information and multipurpose maritime operations help tackle today’s evolving challenges at sea.

Today’s EU Industrial Maritime Strategy and Ports Strategy marks another important step in boosting the EU’s competitiveness and resilience. Recent developments in the Middle East and in the Gulf, make maritime security, freedom of navigation, and port security even more critical. Under the #PactForTheMediterranean, key initiatives such as #TMED will support low-carbon and renewable-fuel maritime transport, as well as sustainable energy connectivity and value chains among #Mediterranean ports. This includes an increased cooperation with third partners, support for capacity-building and skills development.

🛳️🇪🇺 Europe has a proud history in shipping. The EU-controlled fleet remains the largest in the world, and ships and ports keep our economies competitive and safeguard our quality of life, carrying €1.07 trillion in EU exports every year.

Today and yesterday, we held our fourth workshop on alternative fuels and power systems for ships here at EMSA. We were delighted to welcome expert speakers and panellists from national administrations and industry, across the EU and beyond ⛽🐬🌊🚢

The ECGFF thematic workshop concluded in Lisbon after a day and a half of exchange at EMSA. Discussions brought together authorities, institutions and agencies to share perspectives on security, sustainability, technology and cooperation in the maritime domain.

This morning’s ECGFF discussions at EMSA turned to maritime surveillance technologies and training. Exchanges covered how new tools are used in practice, alongside the role of skills development, trainer programmes and e-learning. @esa

Discussions today at the ECGFF workshop focused on decarbonisation and its operational impact. Panels explored alternative fuels, safety and environmental aspects, and the practical implications for coast guard authorities at sea and in port.

Opening the ECGFF workshop at EMSA, our ED stressed that coast guard authorities operate in an increasingly complex environment and that “no single authority, and no single agency can address these developments alone”, underlining the need for cooperation and shared experience.

This morning at EMSA, the ECGFF workshop opened in Lisbon, bringing together coast guard authorities, EU institutions and experts, including @EFCA_EU and @Frontex to discuss maritime challenges under the theme: geopolitical shifts and capacity building for coast guard operations.

Today our Executive Director Maja Markovčić Kostelac welcomed the incoming Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard, Vice-Admiral Sergio Liardo, to our Lisbon headquarters. Vice-Admiral Liardo also visited our Maritime Support Services centre to see our operational work in action.
