The Peace and Security Council of the African Union today convened its 1337th Session on the Agenda item “Hate Crimes and Fighting Genocide Ideology in Africa” under the Chairship of Ethiopia.
The session marked the first substantive agenda chaired by Ethiopia since it assumed the rotating monthly chairmanship of the Council.
Along with the AU PSC members, participants included member states of the African Union, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs) and International Partners.
During the session, lessons learned and experiences were shared on the mitigation and prevention of hate crimes and genocide ideology. In addition, participants exchanged views and deliberated on the importance of education, awareness raising initiatives, and the domestication and effective implementation of relevant AU and UN normative frameworks.

As Ethiopia takes on the chairship of the AU Peace and Security Council for the month of April 2026, I am honored to warmly welcome both the newly elected and re-elected members of the Council.
This flag hoisting ceremony symbolizes our shared commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability across Africa. Congratulations to Benin, Gabon, Lesotho, Morocco, Somalia, and South Africa on beginning their terms as new members. We also commend Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, and Uganda on their re-election for another two-year mandate.
In its role as Chair, Ethiopia reaffirms its dedication to cooperation, constructive dialogue, and the principle of “African solutions to African problems.”
Together, let us continue to strengthen the Council’s efforts toward a peaceful, prosperous, and united continent.

I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Ambassador Konjit Sene Giorgis, a doyenne of Ethiopia's modern diplomacy. We remain forever grateful for her role in the founding of the OAU and the subsequent transition to the AU. More than her vast achievements, it was her unyielding love for Ethiopia and the African cause that defined her. Konjit was the companion we leaned on for wisdom, and she will be remembered for her impeccable service and held in the highest reverence.

Throughout her service, she assumed major responsibilities across a wide range of diplomatic roles, making significant contributions to Ethiopia’s foreign service. Widely recognized as Ethiopia’s second female Ambassador, following Yodit Imru, Ambassador Konjit served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Ethiopia’s diplomatic missions in Ottawa, Cairo, Tel Aviv, and Vienna during her career. In addition to her bilateral assignments, she represented Ethiopia in key multilateral institutions. Notably, she served as Permanent Representative to the African Union and to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
