In Brussels this week for the annual convening of EU Ambassadors. This is a time for exchange on the EU's external activities and strategic outlook. But of course, recent global events and the EU's role take center stage. Straightforward dialogue is imperative at this time.

The EU has always sought stability and predictability in the transatlantic relationship. This was the objective of the Joint Statement from August. I'm grateful to @howardlutnick for speaking with the EU Ambassadors tonight so we can get some clarity on recent trade decisions.

Iran’s attacks of a number of countries in the Middle East are inexcusable. The events must not lead to further escalation that could threaten the region, Europe and beyond, with unpredictable consequences. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of EU citizens in the region. The EU expresses its solidarity with partners that have been attacked or affected. We will continue to contribute to all diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and bring about a lasting solution to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. I will convene an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council via video link on Sunday to address Iran and the rapidly unfolding events across the Middle East. I have been in contact with our partners in the Gulf countries. The Iranian regime’s indiscriminate attacks against its neighbours carry the risk of dragging the region into a broader war and we condemn this. It is essential that the war does not spread any further. The Iranian regime has choices to make.

Following the ongoing situation in Iran, I am convening a special Security College on Monday. For regional security and stability, it is of the utmost importance that there is no further escalation through Iran’s unjustified attacks on partners in the region.

The developments in Iran are greatly concerning. We remain in close contact with our partners in the region. We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to safeguarding regional security and stability. Ensuring nuclear safety and preventing any actions that could further escalate tensions or undermine the global non-proliferation regime is of critical importance. The European Union has adopted extensive sanctions in response to the actions of Iran’s murderous regime and the Revolutionary Guards and has consistently promoted diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the nuclear and ballistic programmes through a negotiated solution. In close coordination with EU Member States, we will take all necessary steps to ensure that EU citizens in the region can count on our full support. We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, to protect civilians, and to fully respect international law.

We have already gone from relying on Russia for over 45% of our gas imports to just 12%, and we’re bringing it down to zero. The EU has now become the largest buyer of US liquified natural gas at 65% of exports—creating American jobs and boosting the US economy at the same time.

As we mark both 10 years since the first US LNG cargo ship departed Louisiana and 10 years since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, I expressed the EU’s commitment to greater energy security collaboration at the EU-US @LNGALLIES Cooperation Summit in Pittsburgh.
