On 29 August, the people of Iceland will vote on whether to restart talks on joining the EU. If Icelanders vote to go ahead, we are determined to quickly advance negotiations on Iceland’s priorities. With Foreign Minister @thorgkatrin I discussed Iceland’s specific realities.

From negotiation tables to EU missions on the ground, women play a vital role in building peace and security. On International Women's Day, we recognise their indispensable contribution to lasting peace. Research shows peace agreements are more likely to endure when women take part in peace processes. Iceland has announced holding a referendum on whether to restart EU membership negotiations. A significant decision now lies ahead for the Icelandic people. Iceland is already a strong and trusted partner. In a world that is changing fast, the European Union offers an anchor in a community of values, prosperity and security. Accession negotiations always reflect the specific realities of each candidate country.

Tehran is now trying to export the war to as many countries as it can. Today, EU Foreign Ministers and our Gulf partners will discuss what we can do together to break the cycle of violence. The same drones that are attacking Kyiv, are now attacking our partners in the Middle East. So we will explore how we can support drone interceptor production. My doorstep ↓

The situation in the Middle East remains volatile. But three things are clear: First, there is renewed hope for the long-suffering people of Iran. We strongly support their right to determine their own future. Second, we must do everything possible to de-escalate and stop the conflict spreading. Iran must cease its reckless and indiscriminate attacks on its neighbours and sovereign countries. Third, the stability of the region is of the utmost importance. The only lasting resolution is a diplomatic one. This means a credible transition for Iran which includes the halt to both the nuclear and ballistic programmes, as well as an end to destabilising action in the region. This afternoon, we will discuss the overall situation in the meeting of the Security College. Because from energy to nuclear, migration to security, Europe must be prepared for the fall-out from recent events.

Iran’s attacks of a number of countries in the Middle East are inexcusable. The events must not lead to further escalation that could threaten the region, Europe and beyond, with unpredictable consequences. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of EU citizens in the region. The EU expresses its solidarity with partners that have been attacked or affected. We will continue to contribute to all diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and bring about a lasting solution to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
