Thank you MK @BismuthBoaz, chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, for an engaging online exchange with EU member states ambassadors about the current regional security situation, as well as about important political issues.

Together with my colleagues, today we visited the site of an Iranian missile impact in Beit Shemesh, where 9 Israeli civilians were killed. We witnessed sobering and depressing scenes, but also the resilience of the local community. Thank you Amb @stefaanthijs for arranging this!

Many thanks to Opposition Leader @yairlapid for a wide-ranging online exchange w/ EU member states ambassadors. We discussed the current regional security situation, including wars with Iran and Hezbollah; dramatic situation in West Bank and Gaza; domestic political developments.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz hurts the global economy and helps Russia fund its war. It is affecting our partners in the region and is dangerous for global energy supplies. Today, EU Foreign Ministers will discuss how to better protect shipping in the region, including contributions from our Aspides naval mission. I visited Magen David Adom @Mdais National Headquarters in Ramle, including the paramedics training center, the national call center & the underground emergency blood bank. Deeply impressed by the dedication of staff & volunteers. Humbled to have been able to donate blood myself.

We organized a visit today to Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Ichilov @tasmc1, for ambassadors from EU and other European states. In the Situation Room and the amazing underground emergency hospital, we witnessed Ichilov's impressive emergency readiness and continuity of care.

Hezbollah’s decision to attack Israel in support of Iran endangers the entire region. Israel has the right to self-defence in line with international law. From negotiation tables to EU missions on the ground, women play a vital role in building peace and security. On International Women's Day, we recognise their indispensable contribution to lasting peace. Research shows peace agreements are more likely to endure when women take part in peace processes. I joined @TelAviv Mayor @Ron_Huldai today for a situation-assessment meeting at the impressive municipal emergency operations center. Kudos to all working to save lives. We also toured the site of a ballistic missile hit. Top priority now is to ensure the safety of civilians.

On Purim, children and families should be celebrating in costume, not sheltering from indiscriminate fire. Solidarity with civilians who deserve to observe their holidays in safety. Wishing all a safe and quiet Purim.

I welcome the announcement made by the Lebanese authorities, banning Hezbollah’s military activities and demanding that those responsible for firing at Israel are brought to justice. It is a game changer. I spoke to President Aoun on recent developments in Lebanon. It is now important for Israel and Lebanon to resume security coordination, so the Lebanese Armed Forces can disarm Hezbollah and ensure the security of all Lebanese people.

Iran’s attacks of a number of countries in the Middle East are inexcusable. The events must not lead to further escalation that could threaten the region, Europe and beyond, with unpredictable consequences. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of EU citizens in the region. The EU expresses its solidarity with partners that have been attacked or affected. We will continue to contribute to all diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and bring about a lasting solution to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. On behalf of my colleagues at @EUinIsrael and myself, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of those killed by Iranian strikes. May their memory be a blessing! Full solidarity with civilians suffering under heavy indiscriminate fire.

The death of Ali Khamenei is a defining moment in Iran’s history. What comes next is uncertain. But there is now an open path to a different Iran, one that its people may have greater freedom to shape. I’m in contact with partners, including those in the region that bear the brunt of Iran’s military actions, to find practical steps for de-escalation.

I will convene an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council via video link on Sunday to address Iran and the rapidly unfolding events across the Middle East. I have been in contact with our partners in the Gulf countries. The Iranian regime’s indiscriminate attacks against its neighbours carry the risk of dragging the region into a broader war and we condemn this. It is essential that the war does not spread any further. The Iranian regime has choices to make.
