One of the most comprehensive articles written on Alberta’s healthcare pressures by @BillKaufmannjrn Worth the read. edmontonjournal.com/feature/alread… ER overcrowding isn’t just an emergency department problem, it’s a whole-system capacity and flow problem. Solutions: 1. Expand home and community care so seniors can remain at home instead of occupying hospital beds. 2. Increase long-term care capacity to reduce pressure on acute care hospitals. 3. Recruit and train more healthcare workers, including expanding medical school seats, nursing programs, and credentialing internationally trained professionals. 4. Strengthen team-based primary care networks so family doctors can care for larger patient panels with support from other providers and better manage chronic disease to prevent hospitalizations. 5. Use technology (e.g., AI-assisted triage) to improve access and efficiency in the system. 6. Add acute-care beds to meet growing demand. We need to get to 2.4 beds/1000 and for 5 million people that means 12,000 hospital beds. today we have 8,800, so that is another 3200 beds to meet today's needs to catch up with a lot of deferred care. 7. Develop long-term budgeting, workforce and infrastructure planning to prepare for population growth, an aging population as well as technological advancements. @Albertadoctors @UnitedNurses @edmontonjournal @calgaryherald @TheBreakdownAB @cspotweet @ryanjespersen @PfParks @JMeddings @BradenMannsYYC @ABDanielleSmith @nenshi

Folks its the beds.... It's not the pt with sniffles, its not the immigrants, its simply that AB governments over the last 30 years have been cutting the number of hospital beds. We've reached the point where people are dying. cbc.ca/news/canada/ca…

Bottom line. AB's are dying in our ER's because we can't move ER pts to acute care beds. We need more staffed beds. Nobody in gov seems to be taking this on as 'their job'. Oh, but we can work on water pipes with the city....
Courtney Theriault@cspotweet

Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services Jason Nixon pushes back against claims from @RajSherman that ALCs/"bed blockers" are a major factor in ER crisis. Nixon adds that Sherman's number are no accurate, but that the UPC is working to bring down the numbers around ACLs
