Braved the heat to be out campaigning for the excellent @bevcraig today in Bury. I've worked with Bev over many years and she will be a brilliant Mayor. She has been a big supporter of our plans to regenerate our town centres and grow our borough to the benefit of all!

Following Cllr Louise Gittins’ decision to step down as LGA Chair, the LGA Labour Group has announced it will nominate Cllr Eamonn O’Brien as LGA Chair. The election will take place at the LGA General Assembly meeting on 7 July. local.gov.uk/about/news/lga…

We made the case for future growth funding and highlight the huge potential of our communities. Bus usage in Greater Manchester has increased by five million journeys (155m to over 160m) since franchising. At the same time GM is reducing fares and expanding frequency of its trams; its use has increased from 42m to 46m journeys too. It’s the start of reversing the decline accelerated after deregulation, and recovering the hit from Covid. It’s a shame it’s being used by one mayor to criticise another. The focus should be for every area to get the investment and improvement it deserves.

In Bury, we bucked the national trend and outperformed much of Greater Manchester, resisting the scale of political shift seen elsewhere across the region and the country. While Labour lost ground in other parts of Greater Manchester and Reform performed strongly in many Labour areas, Bury delivered a different result. It may be too soon and overstated to offer it as a good example to follow but the exception is worthy of noting. Reform can be beaten back. In Bury North, only Conservative-held wards switched to Reform, and one was a defection earlier in the campaign, reinforcing the point that Reform’s advance was strongest where the Conservatives switched or collapsed rather than where Labour stood strong, present and reliable in our community. Where Labour won off the Tories in Bury North, this felt like the electorate understanding the threat to the one-time all one-nation Remain Tory ward and so they did the best thing to defeat Reform there, and voted Labour. Labour still faced real challenges, with the Workers’ Party taking a seat from Labour, abetted by the Green vote. Despite the only Labour loss Labour still finished ahead of Reform who were a close third in a busy field. Ultimately, Reform will be only the second-largest opposition party on Bury Council, as the independent Radcliffe First group remains the official opposition to the Labour-led, Labour-retained council.

@LucyMPowell has been a great friend of Bury Labour for years, always ready and willing to come along and campaign. She would be a fantastic deputy leader of our party and showed today at the Conference hustings how she will do this, not just for Bury, but for the whole country!

Always good to be out on the doorstep, having conversations about the big issues of the day and picking up local casework for us to work on. Also an opportunity to share the great progress being made on the regeneration of Prestwich Village!
