@EarendelFour A real white man doesn’t need to disrespect his opponent after beating him, in that moment he became blacker than his opponent.

@IcyVert The players topper was indiscriminately platooning up until he was fired are now all on their personal best hitting streaks as everyday players. Remember the Stott bunt in the last NLDS? Total loss of confidence in their leadership after that

I continue to ask. How has firing the manager made everyone better at hitting baseballs I don’t quite understand it

Everyone I like is suffering. Everyone I don't like is becoming wildly successful. This has been the story of civilization for my entire lived existence so far.

@FlashX_XFlash Forcing women to vote in a referendum for their own suffrage, them voting against it, and giving it to them anyways is maybe a top 5 moment for modern democracies.

Viggo Mortensen had some strong thought on this, which he shared in 2014: “Peter was always a geek in terms of technology but, once he had the means to do it, and the evolution of the technology really took off, he never looked back. In the first movie, yes, there’s Rivendell, and Mordor, but there’s sort of an organic quality to it, actors acting with each other, and real landscapes; it’s grittier. The second movie already started ballooning, for my taste, and then by the third one, there were a lot of special effects. It was grandiose, and all that, but whatever was subtle, in the first movie, gradually got lost in the second and third. Now with The Hobbit, one and two, it’s like that to the power of 10." (“I guess Peter became like Ridley Scott – this one-man industry now, with all these people depending on him,” Mortensen adds. “But you can make a choice, I think. I asked Ridley when I worked with him (on 1997’s GI Jane), 'Why don’t you do another film like The Duellists [Scott’s 1977 debut, from a Joseph Conrad short story]?’ And Peter, I was sure he would do another intimately scaled film like Heavenly Creatures, maybe with this project about New Zealanders in the First World War he wanted to make. But then he did King Kong. And then he did The Lovely Bones – and I thought that would be his smaller movie. But the problem is, he did it on a $90 million budget. That should have been a $15 million movie. The special effects thing, the genie, was out of the bottle, and it has him." Via: The Telegraph

In the audio commentary of The Hobbit AUJ, Peter Jackson says that he was constantly frustrated with the appearance of the orcs in the LOTR trilogy. In Jackson's opinion, CGI is better than makeup and prosthetics in showing how orcs are creatures without any human aspect.

@blancmontagnard Irish hate is the one and only instance when mystery-meat “rightists” can experience the euphoria of punching up with a concurrent good conscience. Leftism is a biological phenomenon. Why they perceive this as being sanctioned still in 2026 just further proves the point.

Unless you are right on (not between) these blue lines I drew, you’re very likely to be dating someone smarter or dumber than you (if heterosexual). Even on the lines there’s likely to be a mismatch (world doesn’t have perfect matching.) Still, most people are partnered with people within 10-15 IQ pts of each other. There can still be equal IQ pairings, but the distribution is such that there can only be so many of them. So even if we perfectly IQ matched all equal IQ couples, most couples would have a mismatch. Given that most people partner up near their IQ, couples on the lower end of the scale usually have smarter women (by some amount), and on the higher end, smarter men. For people on or between the two blue lines, it’s equally likely that either person in the heterosexual relationship is smarter or dumber. FWIW my husband and I are considered smart by most people, and our experience in the world suggests this. And I think he’s probably slightly smarter/high IQ than I am.

Kayla@caryatis

Reading Anna Karenina has made me think about how unusual modern men are for strongly preferring mates at an equivalent level of intelligence. I know one guy who insists only a woman with 140+ IQ is for him. This is unreasonably narrow and tactlessly specific, but lots of single men I know have the same preference. Even if they don't explicitly say she has to be smart, they value things related to intelligence, like "she understands me," "we can have interesting conversation," or "we have similar interests"

Tolkien’s work is actually quite morally grey, just on axes you’re incapable of understanding or at least are blind to because of the presence of unambiguous evil in it
UBERSOY@UBERSOY1

Saying you like The Lord of the Rings over Game of Thrones or any other morally gray universe is basically a self report that you see the world in simple black-and-white terms rather than trying to grasp its complexity. It’s more about intellect than it is about taste.
