Lianas are beautiful too! Transverse sections reveal the patterning of xylem tubes, reflecting how so much stem space is devoted to transporting water skyward.

We quantify, map and analyse wood density across tropical South America. Our analysis led by @mjpsullivan refines the east-west Amazon gradient in wood density, improves it by revealing much finer variation, & extends to Andean, Dry & Atlantic forests. nature.com/articles/s4146…
