Lianas are beautiful too! Transverse sections reveal the patterning of xylem tubes, reflecting how so much stem space is devoted to transporting water skyward.

We quantify, map and analyse wood density across tropical South America. Our analysis led by @mjpsullivan refines the east-west Amazon gradient in wood density, improves it by revealing much finer variation, & extends to Andean, Dry & Atlantic forests. nature.com/articles/s4146…

Connections that bind us: The forested lands of indigenous Amazon people export their water to southern Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay - helping to power the continent and feed the world.

🛰️ 🌳 Happy to be part of the team pioneering a remote-sensing framework combining #LiDAR and RGB(I)/MS sensors to revolutionize #forest monitoring. Recently applied in Paraguay and Germany, this approach unlocks insights for sustainability & biodiversity #conservation.

🔥 New Research Alert! 🔥 Fire is a vital tool for subsistence agriculture in the tropics, but if not properly controlled, it can lead to escaped fires. My latest study explores how Quechua farmers in the Peruvian Andes manage agricultural burns (1/6). doi.org/10.1007/s10745…
