Speaking from experience… I found my lump just a month after a normal OBGYN breast exam. Never thought it would be cancer, but I knew in my gut it wasn’t good. I stayed in denial long enough to enjoy a long-overdue vacation, then faced it when I got back. While waiting for biopsy and staging scans, I stayed up late reading medical journals. Some of it helped, but I wish I’d spent more of that time doing fun shit instead of ruminating. As a healthcare provider I see the hypochondria side too. I believe a lot of it stems from fear of suffering and death, which I totally understand. Fact: none of us get out of this alive. Now we have tons of “preventative” screenings pushed at us - it can make even healthy people feel like they’re constantly looking for something wrong. Being informed matters, but it’s all about balance. Knowledge is power when it leads to action. When it turns into obsession, it just robs you of actually living.

Why do healthy folks seek out *knowledge of disease? Placebo? Hypochondria? What is the potential COST of a diagnosis? What is the PRICE of a healthy lifestyle?
