Many Albertans told me personally they were afraid their bank accounts could be frozen, or that they could be penalized by government, simply for signing the petition. They also shared their shame and sadness that Canada has reached a point where citizens are afraid to participate in a basic civic process. But they all said the same thing: on October 19, in the privacy of a secret ballot, they will be voting Yes to independence.

We should be frank. The sovereigntists probably could have gotten a lot more signatures had there not been a fear that someone in the civil service would leak the list of signatures. There is a fear of stigmatization and abuse by nationalists. 1/3
