How People Earn a Living is Contributing to Malaria Risk in Uganda, Study Finds A new study led by @Makerere University School of Public Health researchers Dr @EdwinahAtusingw and Dr @DavidMusoke14, in collaboration with @OpenUniversity, UK, shows that the ways people earn a living, including farming, livestock keeping, construction, and night-time work, significantly increase exposure to malaria in Uganda. The research highlights how everyday economic activities shape malaria risk, sometimes undermining conventional prevention measures. The study, Livelihoods as a key social determinant of malaria: Qualitative evidence from Uganda, was published on December 2, 2025, in Global Public Health and is based on fieldwork conducted in Busiro, Wakiso District. Using interviews and community discussions, the researchers examined how social, economic, and environmental conditions interact to influence malaria exposure.
