Honored to address the Makerere University Graduation Luncheon organized by the Convocation. I reminded graduates that the world has changed, today it takes more than a degree. You must compete, innovate, go beyond the paper qualification, and intentionally build a strong personal brand. Among millions of graduates, distinguish yourself, reject mediocrity and create indispensability that makes you the man for the job. You are blessed that God has seen you through, as many have not reached this milestone. Remember that at this stage, who you are and how you do things will either open or close doors. Think beyond your field of study, seek opportunities to add value, transform systems, and pursue higher knowledge. Finally, support the Convocation. As a proud Makerere alumnus, I believe in strengthening the community that shaped us.

MakSPH Environmental Health Graduates Trained to Prevent Disease at Its Source In most health systems, attention begins when illness reaches clinics and hospitals. Environmental Health works earlier, preventing disease before treatment becomes necessary. At Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), this preventive philosophy defines how students are trained to identify risks at their source, from unsafe water and sanitation systems to environmental and occupational hazards that shape community health long before symptoms appear. As @Makerere University’s 76th Graduation Ceremony gets underway, 29 graduands from MakSPH are set to be conferred the Bachelor of Environmental Health Science degree tomorrow. The journeys of four first-class graduates reveal how MakSPH is preparing professionals whose work begins where public health is often least visible but most impactful. Their experiences demonstrate how rigorous training, field practice, leadership, and research exposure are shaping a workforce designed not simply to treat disease, but to prevent it. Climate variability found to shape malaria trends in Yumbe District How climate patterns influence malaria transmission is becoming an increasingly important public health question, particularly in high-burden regions such as northern Uganda. New research from @Makerere University School of Public Health examines how rainfall and temperature variations shape malaria trends in Yumbe District, offering fresh evidence on the environmental drivers behind seasonal outbreaks and their implications for disease control. Drawing on five years of surveillance and climate data, the study highlights how predictable weather patterns can help anticipate malaria transmission peaks and inform earlier interventions. How People Earn a Living is Contributing to Malaria Risk in Uganda, Study Finds A new study led by @Makerere University School of Public Health researchers Dr @EdwinahAtusingw and Dr @DavidMusoke14, in collaboration with @OpenUniversity, UK, shows that the ways people earn a living, including farming, livestock keeping, construction, and night-time work, significantly increase exposure to malaria in Uganda. The research highlights how everyday economic activities shape malaria risk, sometimes undermining conventional prevention measures. The study, Livelihoods as a key social determinant of malaria: Qualitative evidence from Uganda, was published on December 2, 2025, in Global Public Health and is based on fieldwork conducted in Busiro, Wakiso District. Using interviews and community discussions, the researchers examined how social, economic, and environmental conditions interact to influence malaria exposure. Read the full article on the school website to learn more about the study’s findings and implications: sph.mak.ac.ug/how-people-ear…

Dr. Atusingwize, a Research Associate in our Department of Disease Control and Environmental Health, successfully defended her PhD dissertation titled “Alcohol Consumption and Social Media Use: Connections and the Pressure to Trend among University Students in Uganda.” Her research examined the intersection of digital culture, alcohol use, and youth behaviour, contributing valuable insights to public health and behavioural research. MakSPH recognises the invaluable supervision and mentorship by our faculty Assoc. Prof. @DavidMusoke14 and Prof. @NazMTumwesigye, whose scholarly guidance was central to Dr. Atusingwize’s great achievement.

Inside Uganda’s Silent AMR Crisis: Counterfeit Drugs, Antibiotic Overuse, and What Wakiso’s Evidence Reveals Two new studies by researchers at @Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) reveal a troubling pattern at the centre of Uganda’s escalating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis, a public health challenge where disease-causing bacteria and other germs stop responding to known medicines meant to kill them, making common infections harder or more expensive to treat. The studies, conducted in Wakiso and neighbouring districts and recently published in leading scientific journals, examined key drivers of AMR from distinct yet connected perspectives. Together, they expose a health system under strain; shaped by poor-quality medicines circulating in communities, high and often inappropriate antibiotic use in healthcare facilities, and limited public awareness of safe medicine use, conditions now reinforcing one another and accelerating drug resistance. New MakSPH Study Calls for Wider Use of Photovoice to Strengthen Health Systems Research A new study published on November 27, 2025, in the BMC Journal of Health Research Policy and Systems argues that Photovoice should be more widely adopted in health systems research for its ability to elevate community perspectives, generate richer evidence, and empower marginalised groups. The article, titled Use of Photovoice in Health Systems Research: Methodological Considerations and Experiences from Uganda, is co-authored by @DavidMusoke14, Sarah Nalinya, Carol Namata, @cssemugabo8, @rawleng, and Elizabeth @LizEkirapa of @Makerere University School of Public Health. The study examines how Photovoice, a participatory research method that enables community members to use photography to document and interpret their lived experiences, can improve the quality, inclusivity, and policy relevance of health systems research. The researchers sought to clarify methodological and ethical considerations while grounding the discussion in MakSPH’s practical experience applying Photovoice among community health workers in Wakiso District. Using a qualitative Photovoice design, the research team trained 10 community health workers, who produced 432 photographs over five months and used them during monthly dialogue sessions to reflect on their day-to-day work. This hands-on component illustrates how Photovoice moves beyond theory by generating nuanced, participant-driven insights. The study found that Photovoice amplifies community voices, shifts power from researchers to participants, and produces deeper, more contextualised evidence than traditional qualitative approaches. Through their photographs, community health workers highlighted five major responsibilities; health education, home visits, management of childhood illnesses, community mobilisation, and record keeping, while exposing the challenges embedded in these roles. The authors recommend broader use of Photovoice in Uganda’s health policy and systems research, particularly when engaging groups whose perspectives are often overlooked. They further call for strong ethical preparation, continuous participant support, and deliberate dissemination strategies to ensure that findings reach local leaders and policymakers who can act on them.
