A small government is necessary if people are to prosper. With private outputs being the main source of government sustenance, it is optimal to leave most of it in their hands, which translates to savings, investments and consumption. Smith had this to say on the subject:

Smith reminds us that debt, private or public, must respect the rule of return. With the Kenyan leadership and populace thirsting for #infrastructure, which mostly ends up being #whiteelephants reminds us, pay day comes. Fiscal and investment prudence must be considered!

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡; 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥! Often, society confuses its wealth with money. Adam Smith, 250 years ago, wrote on the relations of money and the general stock of society (GDP). #AdamSmithSeries @IEAKenya

Individual pursuit of their interests creates businesses, employment, and investments across sectors. This, propelled by the exchange of goods and services, is among the leading causes of public happiness, a driver of growth and prosperity. Freedom to do so makes society better.

We are facing multiple wars in Europe (Russia-Ukraine), the Gulf region (US/Israel-Iran, and Iran-its neighbours), and coups & totalitarian regimes across Africa. Smith notes that war is a setback to the progress of nations, especially small-open and commerce-dependent nations.

Smith was keen to note that profit incentivises investment. Kenya has an interventionist government, lawfully and unlawfully, and thus ends up messing with the incentives system in favour of some people . That limits investment. (Low growth and unemployment) Time for a rethink
