@sensorystories_ Yes this has been very damaging to all autistics. I was heartened that ASAN and parents of high support needs autistics signed a statement criticizing Kennedy.

It breaks my heart that there's such a divide within the autistic community between late diagnosed lower support needs autistic adults and parents of higher support needs autistic children. The divide is costing us dearly. We are all losing ground because of it.

@sensorystories_ When I was first diagnosed a dozen years ago I did that. Then I realized by doing that I was triggering the basic parental instict to protect the family from outsider attack. I was pretty much guaranteeing they would never listen to anybody advocating for autism rights again.

Fellow lower support needs autistics, this post is for you. Vilifying well-intentioned parents is not the way. It's just as ineffective and harmful as the shame tactics that were used on us throughout our lives to manipulate us into compliance.

@sensorystories_ Disability does not necessarily mean inability. Meaning some, probably most of us have impaired ability to pick up facial and other non verbal cues, not no ability at all.

There's a bit of a misconception that autistic people can't pick up on facial cues... probably because some autistic people actually can't... but this is not even close to a universal experience.

"Autistic people take everything literally" This is not an accurate statement, and I'm going to explain why. Yes, autistic people do often take things literally, but there's more to it than that...

@sensorystories_ FWIW Masking is deliberately changing ones natural behaviors to fit in. It may or may not be internalized ableism. Outside of behavoirs that cause harm if you believe the majority behaviors are correct and your natural behaviors are flawed that is internalized ableism.

There’s something that’s been frustrating me, and I want to address it. When I talk about internalized autism, I keep hearing “That’s just masking.”

@sensorystories_ I was diagnosed at 55 and am turning 68 next month. I do wonder if the serious health issues I have had is normal aging, or aging plus internal and external stressors that comes along with being autistic in an ND world.

If you're a high masking autistic person, does this resonate with you?

Someone just commented on my post about internalized autism saying "that's high masking. The mask will eventually break." Not for me. For me, it's not my mask that breaks. It's me.

@sensorystories_ I dislike that framing because it implies we are not human.

I really dislike the whole "autism is a superpower" framing because it completely ignores the disabling aspects of it, but also because it feels like when people say that they're humoring us rather than celebrating us.

@sensorystories_ If a person gets a self diagnosis wrong that is thier problem not yours. If you feel the self diagnosed threatens your Autistic identity that is your problem not theirs.

And if you are more worried about the tiny percentage of people who are getting it wrong than the HUGE NUMBER OF US who are still undiagnosed but also VERY MUCH AUTISTIC... I just have one question for you. Why?

All the people screaming about self-diagnosis not being valid and tripling down on undiagnosed people not deserving services without a formal diagnosis are missing the point by a COUNTRY MILE.

Because we would be autistic with or without that piece of paper. And those of us who are, in fact, autistic... BY DEFINITION NEED SUPPORT to not be disabled by our brain wiring.

@sensorystories_ For those of you for whom a competent clinician is unavailable or unaffordable a thorough self diagnosis is a more than an adequate workaround

We KNOW self diagnosis won't get us services and support (usually). In fact, waving around a diagnosis often attracts even more discrimination and hate than we were getting already.

@sensorystories_ FWIW my advice is if a competent clinician is available and affordable get a professional diagnosed. Better now than later during a crises.

This is undiagnosed autistic me as a child. I never smiled. I was physically uncomfortable most of the time. I cried. A lot.

@draevans As a small minority the last thing we should be doing is dividing over language when there are more important issues such as autistics being abused and killed by their caregivers, and abomadable high suicide and low employment rates.

Please stop saying Asperger Syndrome is Nazi. You are dishonouring every autistic person who perished in T4. Remember Asperger sent autistic children to their deaths. Blame the diagnostic manual writers not autistic people who were diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.

@draevans While I prefer Autistic because of Asperger’s past after years of people demanding I use “person with Autism”, instead of Autistic which I prefer I am loath to lecture other autistics on how they should describe themselves.
