A coalition of Boston schoolmasters warned in the 1840s that teaching children to read by memorizing words or the "whole word" method would result in:
•poor spelling
•weaker comprehension
•slower reading development
Relying on their vast experience teaching students, the schoolmasters underscored that letter-sound association, or phonics, was crucial for learning to read.
They were right.
But education "experts" have ignored this reality for over 170 years.
The result: catastrophic levels of functional illiteracy.

It was our first month of homeschooling in Oklahoma. Very small town (Terral). So it was obvious that some of the kids in the town were not at school. The police knocked on our door before we were even awake and told my parents that we were truant. My aunt was also homeschooling in the same town, and she got the same visit. Our pastor's wife picked up the kids (my sister, my cousins, and me) and took us to her house while our parents and aunt were taken to the county sheriff's office. They were held there all day, but not booked. Lawyers from out of state were made aware of the case (somehow! It was 1983!) and informed the Sheriff that homeschooling in Oklahoma was protected by the state constitution, and had been since statehood in 1908. Those lawyers eventually became Home School Legal Defense Association. At the end of the day, my parents and aunt were released pending a court date. In January, they got a letter stating that the charges had been dropped.

Valuing children is right. So is asking what the funding requires of the families who accept it. Those are not opposing ideas. The rescue is for families to get out of government funding and oversight, and adopt their education independence.

He homeschooled his own three children even while passing the country's first compulsory schooling statute in 1852.
