Today marks the 1st day of Black History Month but this year is a little different. This year marks 100 years of Black History Month but let me break this down a little. In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson created what was known as Negro History Week to occur the 2nd week of February...the 2nd week to commemorate the birth dates of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln (relative to emancipation). In a nutshell, he felt that Black people have a rich history that must be read, studied, researched, examined, taught, learned and celebrated....and during this very difficult era for Black people in America, Dr. Woodson had the audacity to declare the 2nd week of February as Negro History Week...and it stuck. In the late 60's and early 70's, colleges and Black student organizations began to expand Negro History Week into a month and then in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month nationwide. Bottom line...Black History Month is not a "February thing." It should be looked upon as an annual launch into the next 11 months of reading, studying, researching, examining, teaching, learning and celebrating the history of Black people. In other words, Black History in America represents the missing pages of American History. If the schools are unwilling to teach it, we still must learn it nevertheless.

When Khadim Thiam and his friends posted a TikTok trying matcha, they were hit with hate — for simply showing joy. So they kept going. Now OSB (One Strong Brotherhood) is breaking stereotypes and spreading Black Boy Joy with every new adventure. We love to see it!

I am very honored to have been selected as one of NC’s HBCU Living Legends. While I am not sure I live up to the status of legendary, I have and will continue to serve in a way that I hope leaves a lasting impact. Proud ECSU graduate!

Maggie L. Walker didn’t just build a bank — she built opportunity. First Black woman to charter a bank, St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in Richmond (VA), she helped 645 Black families finance their homes. A true visionary who turned pennies into prosperity! #BlackHistoryMonth2025
