New OpenFold3 preview out! (OF3p2) It closes the gap to AlphaFold3 for most modalities. Most critically, we're releasing everything, including training sets & configs, making OF3p2 the only current AF3-based model that is functionally trainable & reproducible from scratch🧵1/9

David Botstein was a towering figure in genetics, genomics and biology. He was a mentor of extraordinary impact, which I experienced personally as a PhD student in his group at Princeton University. He will be remembered for his incisive and formidable intellect, his strong and unapologetic opinions, and his deep, unwavering commitment to his students and to the broader scientific community. David contributed bold and generative ideas to genetics and genomics. His insight that associations among polymorphic loci could be used to identify the genetic elements underlying diverse phenotypes fundamentally influenced early efforts in mapping and understanding the genetic basis of traits and disease. He was also a pioneer in the early development of DNA microarrays to measure RNA abundance, helping to lay the foundation for the field of genomics and large-scale, quantitative biology. Yet beyond these landmark scientific contributions, David’s most enduring legacy may be the generations of scientists he trained and inspired. He emphasized rigor, clarity of thought, and the courage to pursue big, important questions. He demanded intellectual honesty and rewarded genuine curiosity. I count myself among the many who benefited from his mentorship. His influence lives on not only in the discoveries he made, but in the standards he set and the minds he helped shape.

NIH is not issuing awards. You may think that it's because they it is coming up with new directions of research...The apposite is true. Here is a graph showing how many fewer new funding opportunities that NIH has posted over time. -91%, a trend that started on Jan 2025.

This is horrible news for numerical weather prediction in this country. The data that comes from these key parts of our weather enterprise saves lives. DOGE moves to cancel NOAA leases on key weather buildings axios.com/2025/03/03/dog…

NCEP is the nucleus for all weather data in the United States. If this true and there is any lapse in coverage, it will make it nearly impossible for ANY weather entity to predict a severe weather event due to lack of computer model functionality. This is a huge deal. @DOGE
Andrew Freedman@afreedma

NEW: The Trump admin has informed NOAA that two buildings that are critical for weather forecasting will have their leases canceled. If this comes to pass, it's a really big deal. Includes weather fcst nerve center in College Park, Md.: axios.com/2025/03/03/dog…

“Also in limbo are the intramural program’s trainee programs. One, a “postbac” program that employs some 1600 recent college graduates, is key to staffing many labs and launching young scientists’ careers, one NIH senior scientist says.” science.org/content/articl…

I'm quoted in this article on how NIH is still blocked from funding new grants. This sabotage makes no sense. Nearly every medicine or treatment you've ever received has roots in NIH-funded research, and every $1 of NIH spending generates $2.46 in returns. wbur.org/news/2025/02/2…

NIH serves the US public. If you value the ability to get diagnosed and having treatments to a disease when you or a loved one get sick (cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart or kidney disease, diabetes, etc) please consider calling your representative. This has to be stopped. #SaveTheNIH

Friends, I am at a loss of words for how devastating it would be to lose the entire intramural #NIH program. Some of the biggest medical and scientific breakthroughs have come from scientists in the NIH Intramural program. #SaveTheNIH science.org/content/articl…

Gutting the NIH will kill Americans: - Patients lose access to lifesaving medicine - 1000s of lost jobs at NIH and across academia - No research funding = no new medicines and treatments - Fewer trainees/medicines = pharma + health sector crash These are only a few. Buckle up.
Senator Patty Murray@PattyMurray

Trump's illegal NIH cuts mean cancer researchers would be laid off, sick kids going without treatment, and more. These cuts would be DEVASTATING for lifesaving research. Some Republicans have said they agree—but they just blocked my amendment to reverse Trump's NIH cuts anyway.
