Tonight I paid $15,000 tuition learning why we need privacy in blockchain.
After ~6 years working in crypto, I thought of myself as a somewhat a veteran in the space. And yet I just got hit by an address poisoning attack while using the Uniswap wallet.
The ironic part? I knew about this attack already. But it was late at night in Korea and I wasn’t 100% focused.
Here’s what happened.
I moved $15k USDC into my wallet and sent a $1 test transaction first. It went through successfully.
A few minutes later I sent the remaining $15k.
But attackers had already been sending tiny dust transactions to my wallet from addresses that looked almost identical to the one I was interacting with.
In the wallet UI, addresses appear like “0xAAAAA…0000”, so visually they looked the same.
My $1 test went to the real address.
My $15k went to the poisoned one.
Because Ethereum is fully transparent, attackers can monitor wallets and craft these traps.
Two takeaways:
• Never copy addresses from wallet history
• Always verify the full address
Even if you know the attack — one moment of low attention is enough.

@ox_shaman @swader Curious to know! By resolved in a year do you mean Option 1) once mature enough will make solvers obsolete? Or do you mean the market will decide which approach is best and the losing option will fade slowly into obsolesce?

@swader I would think so as well and am still biased towards that option. However due to execution speed and other caveats, solvers like Across still have the edge UX-wise.
All should be resolved within a year or so I'd say.

One thing I've gathered from conversations in Cannes is that the Solver v. Mint/Burn debate is going strong.
On one side people who thing users will express intents as end states and have sophisticated players find ways to achieve it.
On another people who think all execution is done onchain by simply calculating the proper calldata — no counterparties involved.
I belong much more to the latter camp, but have heard some very convincing pro-solver arguments so am adjusting my thinking a bit.
