Bridge update: Ugh (Part 1) Or…How did we get here? Or…Of course, Nicholas Mattiello was involved – but not that one. So far, very little has been revealed about Cardi Corporation's role in the deterioration and eventual failure of the westbound Washington Bridge. I have access to a trove of RIDOT emails that help to explain some things. I’ll focus on just one set of emails here. In 2019, there was angst at RIDOT over repairs Cardi was making to the westbound (now closed) span. Cardi used an overly powerful jackhammer to remove decking and a “link slab” to make repairs. The RIDOT notified Cardi that using that jackhammer type was not permitted and that the hammer was damaging the bridge. I fell off my chair when I read the name of the Cardi engineer who told the RIDOT that the powerful jackhammer would be used: Nicholas Mattiello, the son of the (at the time) powerful Speaker of the RI House. I don’t know the son and will assume he is a good engineer. However, this being Rhode Island, his employment by the largest road construction company in the state has to raise eyebrows. Cardi continued to damage the bridge with the powerful jackhammer despite RIDOT’s directive to stop using it. RIDOT took steps to not pay Cardi for the work done and damage caused by their equipment. See the attached photos that accompanied the emails. Over time, RIDOT withheld large sums from Cardi. Does anyone who works with rebar see what is wrong with these pictures besides the obvious jackhammer damage? Things were getting so heated that other bridge vendors emailed the RIDOT to notify them that the jackhammer was still being used on the bridge. I am struggling to understand how Cardi could be so bold as to completely ignore RIDOT directives. More extraordinary is the obvious damage that Cardi inflicted on the bridge. Was Cardi “untouchable?” If so, why? What else did Cardi do on this bridge that caused significant damage? Did they do whatever they wanted everywhere? And did the things Cardi did that were wrong from an engineering perspective play a substantial role in the bridge's failure? Cardi still has favored status with top management at RIDOT. At a recent industry event, RIDOT Director Alvitti sat at a table with one of the top executives at the now-defunct Cardi Corporation. I may or may not have photos 😊 Stay tuned! There are a lot more emails to read. I have chosen to paraphrase the emails rather than post them so I don’t have to redact email addresses, etc. #RI_Bridge_Debacle

Russia has been bombing Ukraine for 1003 days in a row. Where was this energy @joerogan when Putin bombed Kyiv’s main children’s cancer hospital? Just massacre after massacre of Ukrainian innocents but Ukraine is never allowed to respond and if they do respond they are accused of wanting WW3.
