I’ve been building in DeFi for nearly 4 years. For most of this time, alongside my colleagues as the founder and CEO of Conclave. Conclave, formerly known as Byte Masons, began as a study group in Discord. I would spend all day and night researching Ethereum security and smart contract engineering, then share my findings with everyone there. Others did the same. Soon, knowledge-sharing turned into partnership and collaboration as we began to hunt Gitcoin bounties, take on freelance work, and navigate the budding DeFi industry together. In early 2021, members of our team joined the early rounds of @kernel0x - meeting dozens of now famous founders and learning from the lines of @KanavKariya and @rleshner before they went on to change the world. This passion for excellence in engineering grew into a business, when we launched Reaper on the Fantom network in 2021. We started to share our knowledge on podcasts and with other teams there, and incidentally started managing hundreds of millions of dollars. From there we grew. Our vision has always been a very long-term one. We hired the most motivated, trustworthy, and talented people we could find & taught them how to be badass engineers and DeFi operators. Many are @yAcademyDAO fellows, many have had amazing careers in Web2 and other industries, and I'm honored that they've now left their mark on Conclave. Most of these people have worked with us for close to 3 years now. Together, we’ve worked on dozens of projects, shipped hundreds of pieces of production software, and helped mentor dozens of developers through our apprenticeships and work with @0xBcamp. This past week, we made the incredibly difficult decision to let 15 of these talented people go. The DeFi industry is consolidating. Goals are shifting & many founders can see that we are on the verge of surpassing TradFi’s capabilities. Teams are undergoing the painful transformations necessary to capitalize on this opportunity and Conclave is no different - we are laser-focused on @Cod3xOrg & will complete our mission come hell or high water. The youthful spirit of DeFi is gone. The child had to die for the adult to be born. Remember Luna? Remember Tomb? Remember 500% APRs for LPs? The folly of youth. These were marketing tactics to encourage users to try out this emerging and, quite frankly, risky technology. This was a common tactic to onboard enough people and capital to jumpstart the yield engines. DeFi has grown out of this phase. There are established protocols and clear winners; they don't need to pay people to use their stuff. So, the days of LP'ing a DEX and earning an airdrop worth a Honda Civic are long gone. Their tokens are not likely to 100x overnight, and it's unlikely that we will ever experience a bull market of such ludicrous proportions again. All this speculative energy has shifted, and rightfully so, to meme coins. If you want to buy blindly and pray, start betting on flavor-of-the-month catchphrases and dog pictures. DeFi is officially for grown-ups now—professionals who keep spreadsheets and want revenue numbers and business plans, not Discord announcements and Zealy campaigns. It's staffed by guys who take salaries and are accountable to stakeholders via dumb and smart contracts. This doesn't mean opportunity has all dried up.
