Why is the NHS so stubbornly slow to improve with tackling whistleblowing and helping staff speak up? My take on the undergraduate contribution to this, in the BMJ:

Underhand methods to weaken strikes by UK gov: 1 Briefed inaccurate rubbish to media (student loan changes) 2 Insinuated doctors will harm their careers (protected against by trade union law) 3 Demanded doctors inform employers if striking (also protected by TU law) Tiresome

The leng review isn’t a whitewash. It lays bare a colossal failure of medical leadership. But there’s also no national scope of practice, nothing about PA’s not performing surgery, about PA’s not teaching or assessing medical students… Grey wash maybe?

Only 59% of newly qualified doctors feel adequately prepared for their first NHS foundation job. It’s a core aim of undergraduate medical education… and it was 70% a decade ago. We’re going backwards? GMC’s national training survey of 50k doctors published today

The proportion of medical trainees at moderate or high risk of burnout is also hair raising. At 61%, it’s down from a 2023 peak but still double what it was in 2019.

These questions are new this year, so we don’t know whether this issue is getting better or worse. The GMC is calling it “deeply troubling”

Nearly a quarter of NHS resident doctors feel apprehensive about escalating a patient’s care to a senior clinician. That’s based on data from 50,000 doctors, published today in the GMC’s national training survey. It’s worse in Surgery, Emergency med and Obs and Gynae

The perennial question. Students have a balance too: “Hi I’m Elgan. I’m a 5th year…” “medical student” or “student doctor?” What’s clearer?
