Agritech (or Agtech) in #Africa is hard because of many reasons. Agriculture has a myriad of risks – weather, pests and diseases, natural disasters, price fluctuations, global economic pressures etc. Many #farmers have small, widely dispersed plots and their data is often disintegrated. Agriculture markets in many non-cash crops are often fragmented and disorganized. Trading in farm inputs across borders is hellish especially due to different national rules of engagement. Agriculture extension solutions are complicated because of the myriad of local languages that many African farmers speak. The confluence between agribusiness and markets means that the challenges that come with payments are smack bang right in the middle of agritech. Tech solutions for #agriculture constantly face challenges around access and usability of technologies like internet and smartphones especially for farmers in the lower end of the pyramid. Many of these challenges provide abundant opportunities for agritech founders to innovate. The greatest challenge however remains the very strong negative farmer stereotypes of farming and agriculture in general. A lot of potential sector enablers, especially who are indirectly (and some directly) involved in the agriculture, still think that farming is a pre-occupation of poor, uneducated rural Africans. This view is unknowingly perpetuated unfortunately by some of the most learned or exposed people among us, including many investors, policy makers and ecosystem enablers. Yet, there is a silent working generation of young and middle-aged, relatively modern farmers and smart agriprenuers who are doing the right things in the background, away from the noise. They work and often suffer quietly, learn intensively, spend carefully, negotiate aggressively and live ahead of their time. They are producing for the market, either full time or do day jobs or run other businesses with farming as a second income stream otherwise known as the ‘side hustle’. They sometimes fear to expose their agricultural side because of this negative perception while the brave ones have learnt to use social media to try to change these perceptions by portraying the ‘sexy’ side of farming. They come from both sides. They are either subsistence farmers with a firm belief in the potential of agribusiness stepping up into producing for the market or urban, educated folks stepping down from their world of endless search of urban economic dreams to getting dirty in the lucrative struggle to support local food production for our growing populations. This silent army, I believe, is made of the future champions of agribusiness in Africa. They are here, they are all over and they are waiting to be recognized, supported and to help Africa to be food secure. It is important for them, that we, who consume good food, make laws, set food standards, invest funds, enable trade to use our voices and project an accurate perception of agriculture as a professional endeavor full of economic opportunity and one that can transform Africa.

Trees provide a rich source of food. Leaves, needles and buds provide a vital base for wildlife in spring. The splendour of the blossoms provides food for bees, bumblebees and other insects. They provide fruits, nuts, berries and seeds that keep animals safe through the winter.💚
