Utah Jazz beat writer Sarah Todd joined @espnthefan to break down why she doesn't think the Utah Jazz trade up: Q: Break this down for us. Why aren’t the Jazz likely to trade up, and why shouldn’t they? Sarah Todd: I think the most basic way to break this down is this: you should never pay for something you can have for free. At this point, the Jazz would need to give up something to move up to No. 1 — whether that’s current picks, future picks, a young player, or some combination of those things. The fact of the matter is they can stay at No. 2 and still get a player who is just as widely regarded as the No. 1 pick. Let’s say the Wizards take AJ Dybantsa at No. 1. For the last few years leading up to this collegiate season, I had NBA executives across the league telling me that if Darryn Peterson had been in the same draft as Cooper Flagg, they’d have taken Darryn above Cooper. There has been a lot of love and excitement around Darryn Peterson. The same could be said about AJ Dybantsa. I think if this had been an AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cooper Flagg draft, both AJ and Darryn could have gone ahead of Cooper. That’s how excited teams are about these two players. This past season, though, there’s been a slight shift — some because of concerns about Darryn Peterson’s health, and some because of the kind of season AJ had. He looks very NBA-ready and ready to contribute immediately. But the gap is tiny. AJ kind of leads as the consensus No. 1 pick, but by such a small margin because there are still a lot of people who think Darryn Peterson has the highest ceiling and the most talent. So if you’re the Jazz, why are you giving up assets to move up when Darryn Peterson could just fall into your lap for free? And that’s assuming Washington even takes AJ. They could take Peterson and then AJ falls to the Jazz anyway. It’s just about doing the smart thing from an asset standpoint. Then there are all the other contributing factors. Yes, AJ was in Provo at BYU and went to Utah Prep. But that’s two years of his life. That doesn’t mean he wants to stay in Utah forever. The politically correct thing to say is, “Yeah, I’d love to stay in Utah,” but that’s like saying Keyonte George spent time at IMG Academy in Florida and therefore only wanted to play in Florida. And honestly, this is kind of the harsh reality: yes, it would be exciting for the Jazz to have a homegrown product — a guy from Utah Prep and BYU — but that’s not what moves the needle financially for the Jazz. The thing that makes Ryan Smith money is winning. Winning puts people in seats. Winning raises your national profile. And the way to do that is not by giving up assets. It’s by keeping everything you have. Full interview: spreaker.com/episode/5-19-2… 📸: @BYUphoto @BYUMBB

It is going to be something to see in 6 years, when the best player in the NBA is a free agent, aching to go to Utah. 👀🤔

Joe Rogan said the quiet part out loud. A man brought here as a baby. Lived in the US for 20 years. Can’t speak Spanish. No criminal record. Deported anyway. That’s not border security. That’s ripping someone out of the only country they’ve ever known and dropping them somewhere that was never their home. When Joe Rogan starts saying this, the politics have shifted.

@Marcus_Mosher My pick: Caleb Lomu, OT Who I think they'd pick: Jermod McCoy, CB (assuming Pro Day goes well) If McCoy's Pro Day leads to more red flags, then they'd go with one of the OTs or maybe Thieneman.

Let's say the worst-case scenario plays out for the #Cowboys like this. And you can't trade out of No. 12. Who are you taking?

the funniest part is the timing. the Pentagon is simultaneously trying to strong-arm Anthropic into removing safety guardrails for military use while Anthropic's AI is about to be pointed at cartel logistics networks. meanwhile Thales and the French defense tech companies have been quietly building their own AI capabilities for exactly this kind of intelligence work without any of the public drama. the $380B valuation makes a lot more sense when you realize that the same reasoning models used for code generation can also trace financial networks, predict supply chain movements, and correlate satellite imagery with ground intel faster than any human analyst team. Palantir provides the data infrastructure and Anthropic provides the brain. cartels have survived drones and wiretaps but they have never faced an adversary that can process every data point simultaneously and never sleeps

Joe Rogan just accidentally told the truth. A man brought here as a baby. Lived in the U.S. for 20 years. No criminal record. Doesn’t even speak Spanish. Still deported. That’s not “border security.” That’s state power tearing someone out of the only home they’ve ever known and exiling them to a country that’s foreign to them.

@DeseretStone It is clear that you don’t follow sports. What does NIL have to do with any of this?

I don’t really follow BYU sports closely (or any sports closely, actually), but a few thoughts: 1) It’s likely that BYU, at some point, learned about the investigation before the public. It’s most likely that they learned of this when they received a subpoena for records from law enforcement. Such subpoenas generally include what is commonly referred to as a “gag order” which requires the recipient to say nothing about the subpoena. The purpose of this is to avoid tipping off the subject of an investigation (people tend to clam up when they realize the cops are on to them). 2) What are we doing here? Seriously? This is only going to get worse with the NIL and teams paying to bring in ringers. But I’d rather be stuck with a 3-9 team composed of former Farmington and Spanish Fork High starters who are all uncoordinated and tired after their missions than whatever this is.

Breaking down the Parker Kingston Arrest.... BYU wide receiver Parker Kingston was arrested in Washington County, Utah, and charged with first-degree felony rape in connection with an alleged incident that occurred on Feb. 23, 2025, in St. George. The charge follows a year-long investigation by the St. George Police Department, which included the collection and review of forensic evidence, digital evidence, and witness interviews before the case was presented to the Washington County Attorney’s Office for charging review. The length of the investigation IMO reflects the reality that cases of this nature often take time to develop. Investigators typically wait for lab results, analyze digital communications and location data, and conduct multiple interviews before prosecutors determine whether there is sufficient evidence to establish probable cause and seek an arrest warrant. In this case, authorities ultimately moved forward with an arrest warrant, signaling that prosecutors believed the evidentiary threshold had been met to file charges. Kingston is currently being held without bail. Per some that I have spoken with.. this fact underscores how serious the court is treating the charge at this early stage. While bail determinations can change and do not represent a finding of guilt, pretrial detention without bail is generally reserved for serious felony cases and could reflect the confidence that prosecutors have in the initial court proceedings. He’s scheduled to appear in court Friday, where a judge could address bail. In serious felony cases, defendants are sometimes held without bail initially, with the court deciding later whether to set bail or keep them detained as the case moves forward. Brigham Young University acknowledged the arrest and issued the following statement: “BYU became aware today of the arrest of Parker Kingston. The university takes any allegation very seriously and will cooperate with law enforcement. Due to federal and university privacy laws and practices for students, the university will not be able to provide additional comment.”

In the end It’s not the competition It’s not the lost customers It’s not the market changes It’s not the venture funding You can get past all that It’s the internal battles that wear you down The drama inside, not outside The ultimate unforced errors Go tell your cofounder you appreciate them Go give your best VP more options tomorrow Go say Thank You Go apologize. Apologies are free. Lead from the front. Backfill the Great but Flawed. Let them run. Trust the best. Move on from the rest.
