@Schaferhund2 @gcochran99 @elonmusk This will be a fascinating subject of historical study in the future. It's like if Rome collapsed because they just forgot the roads and the legions are kinda important and decided to cut them. The US cedes the world to others because they forgot how they held it.

@Schaferhund2 @gcochran99 @elonmusk It's funny that the US empire is collapsing because they forgot how it works. USAID is an instrument of US soft power, the envy of countries like Russia. It's the gentler arm of US influence, which together with a global military makes most of the world follow US interests.

@torybruno @treegnomie @OpenAI @PwC How do you deal with hallucinations and mistakes? An enduring problem with AI I have is that any figure or fact it gives needs manual verification anyway because there's no guarantee it's correct.

@treegnomie @OpenAI @PwC My strategy is to use AI to free my people to be more effective. This first application was the generation of a strength report. An Important, but tedious task. Freeing my rocket scientists to focus on its content and use instead of its form, integration, and data searches.

@NightlifeMingus Necromancy may be legal in Cyrodiil, but few will openly admit to practicing it now that the Mages Guild has banned it.

The Mages Guild is holding back magical innovation and progress. Tinkering with the necromantic arts will certainly be worth the risk.

@spoiELLEd @ABC7 It's not really the taxes. They halve the prize if you take it as a lump sum instead of yearly payments over 30 years. So it was really a $22 million prize, of which $5 million went to taxes.

It was a longer wait than expected but an Orange County man has been paid the winnings from a $44M lottery jackpot he won in August. After taxes and cash-value option, he ended up with about $17M almost 12 weeks after buying the Powerball ticket. abc7.la/3V92iiF

Considering whether it's worth deleting all the stuff I've posted with this hellsite going all in on owning your art and using it for AI. Maybe not worth it because I imagine it has all been stolen already, but I don't think I'll be posting anything new here. Gonna be on bsky.

@AlexiLuncnews @SpcPlcyOnline There was no FAA investigation for Starship IFT4 either, and that had various malfunctions as well. Both vehicles completed their mission regardless, which I think is the main criteria.

@AviatorJordan @SpaceX The FAA let them resume launches days after a launch failure. When they're slow, it's because they don't have the resources they need, not because they and SpaceX are enemies. This impression mostly comes from Musk and I'm not convinced he even understands how these things work.

After today’s successful launch of Crew-9, Falcon 9’s second stage was disposed in the ocean as planned, but experienced an off-nominal deorbit burn. As a result, the second stage safely landed in the ocean, but outside of the targeted area. We will resume launching after we better understand root cause

@MoneyPhosphorus @triplchii @FossilFlex This is video game tech tree thinking. Fusion isn't obviously better than fission, and antimatter isn't the superior choice for all uses. In any case, that isn't a fission engine, it's a plasma magnet sail with a reactor for power. There is no reason to use antimatter there.

@Norsehound @twingaussgun You could thrust vector an Orion if you really wanted to! In several ways even, but I don't think the tradeoffs have been studied anywhere because it wasn't really necessary to do. Radiation dangers come with the territory. Any powerful drive will have them.

@Norsehound @twingaussgun Its actual problems, and why its window to exist has probably passed (unless we're talking about the far future which we can't predict), are both its current political impossibility, and the fact that you couldn't use it anywhere near LEO or GEO or you'd fry a lot of satellites.

@Norsehound @twingaussgun It's the only way to get that kind of performance with technology that was available then, or even now. I don't know what you mean by unpredictable - it's a very consistent and controllable system, one that can also gracefully abort a burn the moment anything goes wrong.

@83dollaroring Hot take: Possibly good because there isn't actually anything to fight over up there (other than shooting down satellites which is already a thing), which means military money will be going to something militarily useless with plenty of civilian applications.

Konservatiivit arvostavat Olympialaisia valtavasti. Valitettavaa on, että Olympialaiset eivät ainakaan avajaisten perusteella enää arvosta konservatiiveja. Urheilu tulee pitää politiikan ulkopuolelta. Vasemmistoaktivismi valjastaa kaiken propagandaan ja normalisoi woketustaan.

OK that's a surprised. The FAA wants a report on the mishap before return to flight of Falcon 9, that's going to leave a massive hole in the US launch schedule.
Adrian@BCCarCounters

UPDATE: The @FAANews is requiring an investigation into Starlink Group 9-3. The FAA needs to determine public safety before Falcon 9 can return to flight. See the statement to @NASASpaceflight down below:

@REDACTE4d63 The point is, as you pump more and more power into it, eventually the projectile melts. Winterberg thought to put coolant in the projectile.. and turn it into a thermal rocket. So it cools the projecitle, allowing the gun to put more juice into it, and propels it harder too.

@REDACTE4d63 It could be either a railgun or a coilgun, but I kinda suspect a coilgun would be more useful, since the problem it solves is only relevant when the projectile getting hot is the limiting factor, as opposed to, say, rail erosion.
