Sheldon Whitehouse's letter isn't a press release with adjectives attached. It's an eighty three page appendix of internal Kennedy Center documents, emails, and photographs, backed by firsthand accounts from multiple former project managers willing to put their names behind what they saw. That's the kind of paper trail that doesn't happen by accident. The specifics read like a checklist of what corner cutting actually costs. Steel columns rusting through fresh paint. A reflecting pool that may need to be torn out and rebuilt entirely. An eight million dollar contract to replace the concert hall floor awarded, with no bidding process, to a firm with no prior experience working on concert halls. And the detail that captures the whole operation in miniature, a brand new bathroom floor torn out and redone because the president didn't like the tile color. Whitehouse's letter alleges the rush wasn't about serving the institution at all. It was about having renovations finished in time for Trump to accept a FIFA Peace Prize on site in December, timeline pressure imposed for a television moment rather than sound construction practice. A national memorial to a assassinated president, run like a private vanity renovation with a hard deadline set by ceremony instead of engineering. That's not an aesthetic complaint. That's public money spent badly because the schedule answered to spectacle instead of substance.

One of the most jarring things about adulthood is the realization of how many truly incompetent people are in the most important jobs. When I was a kid, I just assumed everyone “important” was smart or they wouldn’t be important. Boy, was that fucking wrong.

.@JamesTalarico: Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was murdered by ICE. He wasn't their intended target. But he looked like their intended target. Lorenzo was our neighbor, a fellow Texan. He lived in Houston for 35 years. He worked as a construction worker and he sent his three boys to college. His oldest son is a public school teacher. His middle son is an engineer. And his youngest is still in school. Lorenzo Salgado embodied the American dream. His boys called him ‘El Mundo Intero‘ — the whole world. And they watched as their whole world died in a video posted on Facebook. Lorenzo was a child of God, endowed with infinite worth. His life was invaluable. His death was senseless. Our neighbor, our fellow Texan, deserves justice.

In 2020, Trump manufactured the Big Lie, but he could never find the actual "thief" who stole the election. So this Thursday, he's going to invent one. Get ready for the "Bigger Lie" (which will make him look even more desperate than before). defiance.news/p/i-helped-ove…

The EU needs to stop talking big and start truly punishing Russia for its aggression. Hedging bets in hopes of Russia becoming an open, democratic society that will generate massive profits for the world is what got us here in the first place. open.substack.com/pub/irenekenyo…

Justice Elena Kagan on her 2010 confirmation hearing: "Many people have talked about how funny Senator Graham was...What I remember about that hearing was that somehow Senator Graham made me look funny, which is a harder thing entirely, by asking me what I had done on Christmas...many people said to me afterwards that exchange with Senator Graham was the moment my confirmation was sealed." The reason why ICE agents continue to shoot people is because nothing ever happens to them when they do. They essentially have been granted full immunity for whatever they choose to do to people by a lawless regime of thugs.

This will destroy the independent judiciary. If a judge simply rules in a way that you dislike, it is OK to: - Appeal - Question the legal reasoning - Question the factual assessment - Say you think the judge got something wrong It is NOT OK to: - Call for impeachment* - Call the judge a traitor* - Call the judge corrupt* - Strip the judge of security or staff - Doxx the judge - Threaten the judge (or family/staff) - Physically attack the judge (or family/staff) To paraphrase the brilliant Clint Bolick (Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court): "The moment judges start looking over their shoulders, the experiment is up." * Unless there's real** evidence that the judge, e.g., took a bribe. **Real, like it can be prosecuted. Not "Twitter real."

NEW: Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett details the chilling threats her family has faced, revealing the terrifying moment her 12-year-old son discovered a bulletproof vest in her bedroom during the fallout of the Dobbs leak. Barrett also recounted a recent "swatting" incident at her home and receiving threatening anonymous deliveries, warning that while federal judges continue to do their jobs without fear or favor, the current threat level is "really high." "I didn't expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was, and why I had to wear one."
