The Mediterranean Diet myth needs to die. What Americans think Mediterranean Diet means: - Whole grains - Olive oil - Vegetables - Occasional fish - Minimal meat What Mediterranean people actually eat: - Lamb (constantly) - Pork (salami, prosciutto, pancetta) - Fish (multiple times weekly) - Eggs (daily) - Cheese (massive quantities) - Yogurt (full-fat, daily) - Olive oil (yes, this one's real) Greece has the third-highest cheese consumption per capita globally. Italy isn't far behind. French consume 57 pounds of cheese annually per person. Plus all the butter, cream, pâté, and meat. The "Mediterranean Diet" sold in books is a low-fat bastardisation of what Mediterranean people actually eat. Real Mediterranean diet is high in animal products. That's why it works. The fake Mediterranean diet sold to Americans is why it doesn't.
