One morning in 2000, she kissed her fiancé and headed to a movie set. She thought she was coming home to the man she would marry. Instead, by the time she returned, she no longer had a fiancé—and she didn’t even have a boyfriend. While she was away working, Billy Bob had traveled to Las Vegas and married Angelina Jolie. This was the brutal reality for actress Laura Dern. There was no breakup talk, no long-distance argument, and absolutely no warning. She simply went to work as a woman in a committed, long-term relationship and returned to find that her partner had traded her engagement ring for a wedding band with someone else. It remains one of the most ruthless and public betrayals ever seen in the spotlight. For years, Laura and Billy Bob Thornton had shared a life. They lived together, they were a fixture on red carpets, and their engagement was common knowledge. They were building a future, or so she thought. But while she was busy filming, Billy Bob was busy planning a whirlwind wedding with a woman he had just met. The shock of the situation was almost impossible to process. Laura later famously described the experience as a ghosting on a massive, global scale. She said, “I left our home to go and make a movie, and while I was away, my boyfriend got married, and I’ve never heard from him again.” Imagine the silence that followed. There was no explanation and no apology. To make matters worse, she couldn’t even mourn in private. Within days, the entire world was obsessed with the new couple. Billy Bob and Angelina Jolie were everywhere, famously wearing vials of each other’s blood and flaunting their intense romance in front of every camera lens. Laura was left to watch this media circus from the sidelines. Her heart had been dragged through the mud for public entertainment. It would have been easy for her to become bitter or to sell her story to the highest bidder. Many people in her position would have lashed out or tried to humiliate the man who had treated her with such total disrespect. Instead, Laura chose the high road. She refused to participate in the tabloid wars. She didn’t beg for him to come back, and she didn’t try to win a fight against a man who had already shown his true colors. She chose to focus on herself and her career. She realized that if someone has the capacity to discard a person they claim to love without a single word, they are not a person worth keeping. In the end, the story didn’t end with her heartbreak. While the marriage between Thornton and Jolie eventually fizzled out and ended in divorce only a few years later, Laura Dern’s life reached new heights. She didn’t let the betrayal define her. She went on to win an Academy Award, star in some of the most iconic television shows of the century, and earn a reputation as one of the most dignified and talented women in Hollywood. She proved that your character is truly forged in how you handle your darkest, most embarrassing moments. When someone leaves you without the courtesy of an explanation, they are handing you the most honest version of themselves. You cannot build a stable life with someone who lacks the integrity to be honest in the present. The most effective way to respond to a betrayal is to become so happy and successful that the person who hurt you becomes an irrelevant detail in your history. Your value does not decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth. When someone walks away without a word, let them keep walking—they are simply making room for a future you were meant to have.

One thing I’ve not heard much of in the debate about who should be Prime Minister of our country is the human being at the centre of this, & his family, & the effect of this on them all. The vitriol is off the scale. Show some humanity. People we disagree with are not enemies

Urrrgh, Starmer pulling out his family again. Nobody cares about your middle-class (pretending to be working class) sob story. His voice is like nails on a blackboard. Who are these sycophants clapping the rubbish coming out of his mouth

'Strength through fairness'. I bet him and his advisors came up with that thinking it's a really profound and game-changing slogan and not more meaningless word salad. How many times have you 'set out the path ahead', Keir? How many times have you not had a clue what that means?
Keir Starmer@Keir_Starmer

Strength through fairness. Hope for the future. Real answers to the challenges facing our country. This morning, I’m setting out the path ahead to build a stronger and fairer Britain. Watch my speech across my social media channels.

Have accidentally found myself listening to #TheArchers again. Christ, Carol is a pain in the arse. So rude and ungrateful. And why is Natasha still intensely unlikeable? That's the sum of my notes so far.

I’m delighted to appoint @HarrietHarman as my Adviser on Women and Girls. Harriet is a strong advocate for women and girls and I know she will deliver greater opportunity for women in public life. I’m committed to tackling structural misogyny that is a barrier for too many women and girls. I look forward to working with Harriet to drive forward action on this important issue.

Haters out in force in response to clip from interview I did with @NewStatesman podcast. It's fine to disagree on Roman history (that's partly the point), but do they need to say that I'm "vile", a "hag" & they "hate" me. You dont have to hate those with different views, folks.

Unless Starmer has a brain transplant, we now have to endure another two years of Labour's betrayal. Like the Democrats did in 2024 in letting Trump win, they're holding the door wide open for the pernicious Reform party to walk right in and run the country. Fuck them.

I’m 60, and my son is 33. He still lives in my house, sleeping in the same room he grew up in and using the same closet I built for him when he was ten. He eats the food I prepare for him every day. He doesn’t work, doesn’t study, and doesn’t look for anything. He wakes up late, turns on the television or computer, and that’s how his day passes. If I don’t serve him breakfast, he skips it. If I don’t wash his clothes, he leaves them piled on a chair until he has nothing clean left to wear. But it wasn’t always this obvious. It started years ago, little by little, and I allowed it all to happen. When he was a child, I didn’t let him do anything on his own. I tied his shoes until he was twelve because he said it took too long. I did his homework for him “so he wouldn’t get stressed.” If there was a problem with a teacher at school, I went to speak on his behalf. If he argued with a friend, I stepped in. I always told myself, “He’ll have time to suffer when he’s an adult.” I never let him experience discomfort.

Kier Starmer won't turn this around. He doesn't learn from his mistakes. It's arrogance. That and his insufferable pious sanctimony. Trouble is, there's no viable candidate to take his place. What a mess. This government has pissed Labour's legacy right up the wall.

Sandra Bullock held her Oscar in her hands as she thanked her husband from the stage. It was March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. She was 45 years old and was capping 25 years of her career with the award for Best Actress. With a trembling voice, she said she had never known what it meant to have someone by her side, and she thanked him for teaching her that. The audience burst into applause. It seemed like the perfect ending. But it wasn’t. During those five years of marriage, Jesse James had cheated on her multiple times. While she was filming the movie that would earn her the Oscar, he was carrying on parallel relationships. She suspected nothing. There was another detail, too, that had remained hidden. At home, a three-month-old baby was waiting for them. His name was Louis. The adoption had not yet been finalized, and they had decided not to make it public until the end of awards season. So, between interviews and red carpets, Sandra would return each evening to a newborn and a man who was lying to her. Ten days later, everything came out. A model sold her story to a tabloid: an eleven-month affair with Jesse. Within hours, more testimonies, messages, and photographs surfaced. The betrayal became public in a brutal way. Sandra found herself alone, with a newly arrived child and a marriage that was over. She left the house immediately. She took Louis with her. She filed for divorce within a few weeks and completed the adoption as a single mother. To journalists seeking a reaction, she said only that her priority was protecting the first year of her child’s life. Then she disappeared. For months, she stayed out of the spotlight. No interviews, no statements. She focused on her son. In 2015, she adopted a daughter, Laila, without fanfare. Later, she met Bryan Randall, a photographer. He was not part of the entertainment world. He stayed by her side and that of her children. Their relationship lasted for years, away from public attention. In 2020, Bryan was diagnosed with ALS. They chose not to speak about it publicly. Sandra cared for him until the end. Bryan died on August 5, 2023, at the age of 57. After the divorce, Sandra continued raising her children and living away from media exposure. Today, she is 60 years old.
