In the last 11 days in Canada FOUR Indigenous People, including a youth, were killed by POLICE- the latest killing happened yesterday:
-August 30 Hoss Lightning, 15, shot and killed by RCMP
-September 3, Tammy Bateman, struck (with cruiser) and killed by Winnipeg police
-Sunday, September 8, RCMP shoot and kill Elsipogtog First Nation man, N.B.
-Also on Sunday, an unnamed man from Atahkakoop Cree Nation in northern Saskatchewan died in hospital after being shot by RCMP.
I’ve been reporting on this crisis for years. Indigenous Peoples are being systematically murdered in various ways and the police are at the helm of one of them.

The 15-year-old boy from Samson Cree Nation who was shot and killed by RCMP Friday morning in Wetaskiwin, AB was Hoss Lightning. His maternal grandmother sent me this photo taken of him earlier this year (he’s asking his grandmother if he looks like his late grandfather in the photo he’s holding). He was loved and cherished by his family who are devastated.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating. RCMP have told media Hoss had weapons on him (although anything could be considered a weapon and RCMP have not released details). Hoss had called 911 about an hour before he was killed because he was concerned for his safety and believed someone was following him.
A kid. Alone walking around town.
His life snuffed out like countless other Indigenous Peoples who are the victims of the highest police violence in Canada.

Apartheid ended because it was no longer economically viable and sustainable. Not because white people saw it as immoral and had a sudden change of heart.

Hey you know who camped out overnight on @UCalgary’s campus? Me, and everyone else, nearly every week, when we worked at the student newspaper and were publishing. We had sleeping bags and someone even brought in a futon.

In 1999 and 2003, students at the University of Calgary set up a tent city to protest tuition increases and a lack of affordable student housing. Police did not intervene. #yyc #ableg @UCalgary

And this is how it ends.
The use of violence against peacefully protesting students and faculty is morally reprehensible.
Shame on you @UCalgary

People who broke laws that I’m eternally grateful to:
- Queer couples and interracial couples who loved each other when it was criminal
- Women who colluded to open bank accounts when it was illegal
- Medical providers who gave life-saving reproductive care that was banned

Canada has rules. We have laws. You can’t break them just because you think you are right. nationalpost.com/opinion/anti-i…
