Ever wondered what gulls really prefer to eat? 🐟or🥪 Out now: My 2nd #PhD paper, a study of Rescue* Herring gull chicks' food preferences, and whether they could be influenced by their early-life diet. *Chicks reared in captivity as they couldn't be returned to their parents

🎉 Second first-author paper from my PhD research is now published open-access for all to read & share!!🎉 Young puffins are drawn to artificial light & spectrum may not matter. They're also less active under LED compared to sodium light or darkness 💡🐧 authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S00…

I’m seeing a lot of anger and disappointment in badger circles today that the badger cull is ending, but not ending fast enough. Apologies for the long thread 🧵, but tet me explain why I think the news is the best it could be 1/25

@CalidrisPhoto Wow nice find and very bizarre find! Maybe some unfortunate predation interaction or scavenging? would be my guess

Errata: In post 4/7, those claims should be restricted to referring to the *BC* portion of the Salish Sea only. We are in the process of completing work to be able to talk about the entire SS on both sides of the border, but that's still a year or two away.

The culmination of nearly a decade of work: my new paper with Louise Blight @procellaria11 and Wilson Cao on urban-nesting Glaucous-winged Gulls (GWGUs) of @CityofVancouver now online in Ecological Modelling. I'll give the highlights here, but more to come soon. 1/7

To the people asking me "What about the hedgehogs?", can I take a moment to highlight this seal of approval from hedgehog expert-in-chief @hedgehoghugh ? Badgers do eat hedgehogs but the two species coexisted for millennia before pesticides etc came along
Hugh Warwick@hedgehoghugh

As Rosie says - some good news!!! Maybe this will be the moment @DefraGovUK @SteveReedMP will have enough evidence to call off the cull of badgers? Really clear 🧵

It's that time of year again. Have a go at picking out your own juvenile Yellow-legged Gull on our beaches with juvenile Herring Gulls... This YLG was at Broadsands Beach #Torbay yesterday evening - compare with the juvenile Herring Gull photos

@RobThomas14 I'd recommend the tangtastics if I had to choose a haribo. Though I most have a weakness for a mint Terry's chocolate orange atm.. I might need a bigger bird.. 🦅

I wasn't allowed to test crisps with my gull chicks but this adult herring gull has learnt this is a easy meal. Not necessarily good for them at all, but they can't taste spicy foods as they lack the taste sense for capsaicin, which is 'heat' spicy sensation we get.

A shoplifting bird dubbed "Steven Seagull" has been banned from a convenience store for flying off with 30 packets of crisps in the past two months alone bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
