Why does our education system and the media insist on the label of ‘disadvantaged’? Is it because (almost always) the middle class can’t comprehend why some people aren’t like them. Many of these kids are superstars. It’s a terrible label to apply. Terms like ‘low income’ and ‘overlooked’ are far more precise and far less loaded & judgmental

I’m on route to cover the school’s white paper tomorrow. Here’s everything the govt has released (and briefed) so far, and what we are still expecting ⬇️

The government is expected to call for all schools to be part of a trust in its White Paper on Monday, Tes understands. @JohnGRoberts has the full story on this – and other key proposals trailed by the DfE – here ⬇️ tes.com/magazine/news/…

@DrLukeCraddock has @TheBMA been asking for loans to be repaid for those doctors who work for the NHS, reduced year-by-year say over a decade? This should apply to others who work in the public sector too eg state school teachers

This is going to cost unimaginable amounts of money as my generation stops working past the £50k threshold. Many will be reducing hours or refusing extra work. A productivity nightmare. I’ve been working as a doctor for three years. My repayments don’t even cover the interest.

The student loan scandal - interest on loans is more than the repayments for many on Plan 2 so debt grows trapping them with extra 9% income tax for up to 30 years bit.ly/3NcgO8o £15.2 billion interest added to student loans last year, only £5 billion repaid.

@paullewismoney Plus it's not progressive - as wealthy parents tend to pay off the loans on graduation. Those entering public service should have their loans re-paid over their first 10 years of service

and what about the power to replace the board of trustees by an IEB (interim executive boards) - is that being discussed at all? IEBs have a pretty good track record of turning round maintained schools - why not use this model for trusts too?

ICYMI: The government looks set to hand itself sweeping powers to close MATs based on trust-level education failures alone, once new Ofsted trust inspections are introduced. Here's what we know so far... schoolsweek.co.uk/trust-inspecti…

@jon_severs @bphillipsonMP Good to see this happening - inspection of MATs has long been supported by almost all in the sector. Inspection has to evolve to keep up with a system where so many schools are part of a MAT. Leadership, governance and impact is the right place to start.

@mikip555 True, Michael - but the two are intertwined to a certain extent along with the questions Mark raised in the piece. I wonder if the 400 was primarily a @tes headline device? I'm pleased to see any debate as a vision is sorely missing despite a few of us pushing for one for a while

Agreed: 'This scale... is the result of policy drift, disjointed decision making over many political cycles and a period in which growth was encouraged without sufficient regard for coherence' Esp interesting from CEO of ATT, a geographically incoherent MAT! Where to from here?

So much to agree with - it won't surprise you to hear I especially like: "Secondly, leaders should create a culture that welcomes challenge and accountability, that is clear-eyed and ambitious – but driven by governance rather than a fear of the regulator" Could this catch on?!

@ROTSchools @educationgovuk @JabedAhm but remember how it was all about school 'autonomy' in the Academy Act 2010 days: SATs were definitely the preferred structure at the time & for the next few years. They also received some additional funding for a while which was a real incentive for many to convert

Yes finances are a big driver, but the SAT's board of trustees who take the decision is also often v concerned about locality. Yet the schools system is confused - at least on paper - about place. It needs more thought The @educationgovuk White Paper can't ignore place @JabedAhm
Tes magazine@tes

The number of single-academy trusts has been dropping for years, but some of those that remain are top performers. So how will the government persuade them to merge with MATs, asks @JabedAhm tes.com/magazine/news/…

Good to see. Vanessa Ogden is a great person to take this forward - I was on @CommissionOnRE with her (the @RECouncil was the secretariat) up to its final report on 2018. Much effort was made to listen to lots of voices & find a consensus, despite some highly charged views

#VisibleGovernance #TrusteesWeek Good to see an acknowledgement from the minister of all the time and care given
Georgia Gould@Georgia_Gould

This #TrusteesWeek (3-7 Nov) I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every trustee and governor across the country for your commitment and extraordinary contribution to supporting our education system and playing such a vital role in shaping the futures of children. As a former school governor, I understand the dedication and hard work, that trustees and school governors devote to the sector, all in their free time as volunteers. It was incredibly inspiring to meet governors and trustees at the National Governance Association’s Outstanding Governance Awards in September this year to hear first-hand about the amazing work you have been doing to help trusts, schools and pupils across England. Your contribution to education is invaluable. Thank you again for your tireless work, and commitment to helping children succeed!

Anon post: I’m looking to deepen my understanding of finance and the headteacher’s role in managing it. I already have some knowledge, but I want to be fully prepared before my next headship interview. Any advice, resources, or training recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

@Headteacherchat The summer may recharge the batteries. Talking to friends and family could provide useful perspectives. But if you still love the job, try to find ways to keep loving it: would job-sharing work? Speak to your chair of governors in Sept (if they aren't helpful, the vice chair?)

Anonymous post: I’m reaching out for advice and support. I’m really struggling and am starting to question whether I can continue in headship. I love my job, but it’s taking a huge toll on my personal life. It feels like I give everything I can, yet it’s never enough. I’m exhausted and unsure if I have the energy to keep going. On top of that, it often feels like heads and leaders face criticism no matter what we do. For those who’ve been here before, how do you know when enough is enough?
