I had the honour to lead the ⁦@UNAIDS⁩ delegation to the 39th African Union Summit. Our meetings focused on sustainable financing for integrated rights-based community-led national HIV responses. We advocated for a strong Africa Common Position at the June UN HLM on AIDS.

Thank you, H.E. Vice President @Meyliet_KONE of Côte d’Ivoire for meeting today, and for being such an engaged chair of the National AIDS Council. 🇨🇮 is a strong leader and making steady progress in the HIV response. Côte d'Ivoire has been a contributor to @UNAIDS and has increased its contribution significantly this year — now the top contributor in Africa. 🙏🏾

In the fight to #endAIDS, I am grateful for the continued leadership by H.E. President @AOuattara_PRCI and H.E. First Lady @dominiqueouat, who is @UNAIDS Special Ambassador for the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission and the Promotion of Paediatric Treatment for HIV. #AUSummit

In Addis Ababa for the 39th #AUSummit. Thank you @UNAIDS colleagues for the warm welcome and for sharing your insights. A bittersweet moment as we bid farewell to dedicated, long serving staff who have contributed so much to the HIV response in 🇪🇹 and across the continent. I am encouraging African leaders to: ✔️ keep HIV high on the political agenda ✔️ support a strong Common African Position at this year's UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS ✔️ advance Africa’s health sovereignty, building on transformative initiatives like the Lusaka Agenda, Accra Reset, & @_AfricanUnion roadmap. #Agenda2063 🌍

I had a very productive meeting with H.E. Minister of Health Dr @MekdesDaba in Addis 🇪🇹, ahead of #AUSummit2026. I congratulated the Minister for Ethiopia’s impressive progress towards self reliance, sustainability & integration of the #HIVresponse, for her strong leadership as a champion of the Lusaka Agenda, and for containing the Marburg outbreak. Despite last year’s disruptions, Ethiopia succeeded in keeping essential HIV and health services going—a remarkable achievement that protected lives and preserved hard won gains.

I held a productive discussion with @Winnie_Byanyima Executive Director of UNAIDS, on 🇪🇹’s ongoing efforts in HIV prevention, treatment, and care, as well as our broader work to strengthen emergency preparedness and response systems. We agreed to further deepen our collaboration in the years ahead to accelerate progress toward achieving both national and global HIV targets through closer partnership and sustained joint action.

Kenya… #Lenacapavir just got added to our HIV prevention options cart! 🤏🏾 Our @MOH_Kenya just announced the approval, which means very soon, at a clinic near you, a long-acting injectable will be part of your HIV Prevention menu. 🥳 #HIVPrevention #Choice

.@UNAIDS was built to mirror the HIV movement: civil society at the table, not as guests but as equals. Inclusion at the global level gives power, legitimacy, and credibility to networks of people living and at risk of with HIV. Our success comes from synergy: UN + communities. This distinguishes us from the rest of the United Nations. #EndAIDS #LetCommunitiesLead

Without data, without targets, there is no global HIV response and no accountability. The role of the Joint Programme is to set the North Star that drives momentum, that measures progress, and keeps governments, funders and other stakeholders accountable. Every year, @UNAIDS publishes authoritative data on the status of the response – the Global AIDS Update – which guides the response, day in, day out, in country after country. 🔗 unaids.org/en/UNAIDS-glob…

AIDS is not over - inaction is not an option. My Report to the @UNAIDS #PCB57 lays out 5 prerequisites for keeping the HIV response alive and #endAIDS: 1️⃣ Political ambition 2️⃣ Innovation 3️⃣ Setting bold targets & tracking progress 4️⃣ Multisectoral action 5️⃣ Governance with civil society & communities The challenge before us is how to get there—and how quickly we can get there without risking all that we have gained. 🔗 unaids.org/sites/default/…

CHOICE is not about resources but partnerships for ending AIDS by 2030, a manifesto and commitment @awpcab_org @UNAIDS @ICWEastAfrica @ViiVHC
ICWEAAt20@ICWEastAfrica

ICWEA & @apha_sa joined @awpcab_org & ASWA, in partnership with @ViiVHC, convened a powerful satellite session on why CHOICE matters for an integrated & sustainable HIV response. CTA: centre communities to drive demand for biomedical tools for most at risk. #ChoiceManifesto

Education is one of the strongest shields against gender-based violence. Girls with secondary education are up to 30% less likely to experience intimate partner violence. That’s why @EducPlus2025 invests in keeping girls in school. 👇🏾 educationplusinitiative.org #16DaysofActivism

Today marks the start of #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. GBV including digital violence pushes girls out of school. Out-of-school girls are more vulnerable to HIV, exploitation & early pregnancy. Ending violence is essential to keep girls safe and in school. #EndGBV #EndAIDS

As #G20 leaders concluded their meetings, @CyrilRamaphosa & @HelenClarkNZ reminded the world that progress for women, children & adolescents is faltering — a message underscored by the G20 Leaders’ Declaration recognizing the urgency of advancing WCAH. bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

Inequality is a choice. Leaders have a historic chance to address the #InequalityEmergency. Honoured to present with @Jayati1609 the recommendations of the G20 Extraordinary Committee to #G20SouthAfrica. Our primary recommendation: create an International Panel on Inequality.
Winnie Byanyima@Winnie_Byanyima

At the #G20 Summit, 🇿🇦 President @CyrilRamaphosa has opened and spoken for Africa and developing countries of the South. I’m here as one of 6 members of his G20 Extraordinary Committee on Inequality to present our report. Our chair Professor Joseph Stiglitz isn’t able to be here, and I have the honour to co-present our report together with Prof @Jayati1609. #EndInequalities g20.org/g20-media/land…

As G20 kicks off, happy to share my thoughts with @WaihigaMwaura @BBC #FocusOnAfrica about the #InequalityEmergency - a deep concern, here in 🇿🇦 South Africa and beyond. We are urging for leaders at #G20SouthAfrica to halt unsustainable debt servicing, ensure equitable access to life-saving medicines, and support an Independent Panel on Inequality.
