Strong emotions should not replace historical accuracy. First, Egypt did not become Muslim overnight, nor did it go from 0% to 90% Muslim by mass slaughter. When Muslim forces entered Egypt in 639–642 CE under ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, the region was overwhelmingly Christian, specifically Coptic, and remained majority Christian for centuries after the conquest. Historians, including many non-Muslim scholars, agree that large-scale conversion in Egypt was gradual. It took several centuries, driven by social integration, intermarriage, administrative changes, economic incentives, and the appeal of the new ruling culture. Forced mass conversion was neither systematic nor sustainable policy. In fact, early Islamic governance depended on non-Muslim populations paying jizyah; eliminating them would have collapsed the tax structure. Second, the claim of “killed the men, raped the women, enslaved the children” describes what tragically happened in many wars across many civilizations in late antiquity, including Byzantine and Persian conflicts long before Muslim rule. That period of history was brutal everywhere. Singling out Muslims as uniquely violent ignores the wider historical context. Third, the Copts were not religiously free under Byzantine rule prior to the Muslim conquest. Many Coptic Christians were persecuted as heretics by the Chalcedonian Byzantine authorities. Some historical sources even indicate that segments of the Coptic population initially viewed the Arab arrival as relief from Byzantine oppression. That does not romanticize conquest, it simply adds nuance. Fourth, Egypt did not become majority Muslim until around the 10th–12th centuries, roughly 300–500 years later. That timeline alone disproves the idea of instant forced conversion. Fifth, reducing Islam to “a cult of sex, perversion, and violence” is not historical critique, it is polemic. Every civilization’s record includes war and moral failure. Islam, like Christianity, has theological teachings about modesty, family, charity, and accountability before God. Disagreement with Islamic theology is valid. Dehumanization is not. If someone chooses to remain Christian, that is their right. But rewriting 1,400 years of complex Egyptian history into a single slogan does not serve truth. History deserves depth, not slogans.
