"Treat people the way they ought to be treated" is a quiet act of dignity. It means holding to your own standards of respect, kindness, and fairness, even when others fall short. You're not lowering yourself to match poor behavior, and you're not naively expecting reciprocity from everyone. Instead, you're choosing to act from principle, giving people the respect they deserve as human beings, while protecting your own boundaries.
It's different from the more common "treat people the way you want to be treated" because it acknowledges reality. some people will mistreat you no matter what. But you still refuse to let their actions dictate your character.
Holding that line isn't easy. It requires strength, discernment, and sometimes distance. But it preserves your integrity and, surprisingly often, it earns respect in return from the people who matter.
It's a lesson that keeps giving back the longer you live it. 💯
