THE SKILLS GAP DEMANDS SYSTEMIC ALIGNMENT South Africa reports of youth outside the workforce. Institutions process billions in grant applications. A structural mismatch exists between current qualifications and industrial absorption capacity. • Training must align with market demand. • Education requires enterprise capacity to function effectively. We must align educational outputs with verified industrial demand to prevent qualified unemployment. Watch Episode 16 of the Energy Conversations Podcast at the link in our bio. We’re incredibly proud to share that Youth in Energy Conversations, the youth engagement arm of Energy Conversations has been awarded the Youth in Energy Award at the SANEDI 3rd Annual Energy Conference. This recognition speaks directly to the conversations we’ve been intentional about building: creating space for young voices in the energy sector, spotlighting emerging leaders, and supporting the next generation to meaningfully participate in and shape Africa’s energy future. To every young person, guest, and listener who has been part of this journey this win belongs to you. You are the reason these conversations carry weight and relevance. We’re grateful, but more importantly, we’re energized. This is fuel to go even harder expanding the platform, deepening the dialogue, and making sure youth perspectives are not just heard, but taken seriously where decisions are made. A special shout out to our youth hosts Wandile Ntshingila and Nolukhanyo Mpisane, you are a great example of what happens when young people take up space in the energy sector. Grateful. Focused. And building forward. #YouthInEnergyConversations #YouthInEnergy #SANEDIAwards #EnergyConversations #EnergyTransition #NextGenLeaders #VoicesOfTheFuture

1/ Electricity markets have two layers: physical and financial. Garth Greubel explains in Episode 15: “All a trader does is deal with the financial consequences of a transaction between a willing buyer and a willing seller.” 2/ The grid operates under physical laws. Frequency stability, voltage control, inertia. These are engineering realities, not contractual ones. 3/ Traders manage financial risk between buyers and sellers. They do not control power flow in real time. The System Operator does. 4/ A well-designed market must pay for both the financial layer and the physical infrastructure. Blurring the distinction can create pricing distortions. Watch here: youtu.be/beoWYKTPdps?si… #EnergyTrading #GridStability #EnergyConversations

South Africa’s Consumption of Natural Gas Paul Eardley, Oil & Gas Specialist at @StandardBankZA Bank, unpacks South Africa’s natural gas landscape and what it means for energy security, pricing, and long-term planning. Key facts about natural gas in South Africa: ⛽ Domestic gas production is limited, despite South Africa having natural gas resources. 🚢 Most of South Africa’s gas supply is imported, increasing exposure to global price volatility. 🛢️ Local gas reserves, such as the Brulpadda and Luiperd fields, are under development — but commercial production remains years away. ⚡ This reality makes infrastructure investment, diversification, and careful transition planning critical in the short to medium term. Understanding South Africa’s gas consumption is essential for making informed decisions about the country’s evolving energy mix. Follow our Energy 101 series for clear, accessible explanations of how South Africa’s energy system works.
