For two decades, Washingtonians have mourned the loss of our Sonics. Today’s vote is a milestone in the effort to bring NBA basketball back home. The time is right. The state-of-the-art Climate Pledge Arena already hosts professional basketball and hockey with the Storm, Kraken, and Torrent in front of a dedicated fanbase. And we know we have the best fans in the NBA. Bringing the Sonics back is a top priority, and the state will be a strong partner in this effort. I plan to be there at tipoff with thousands of fellow fans when the Sonics return.

Breaking: The NBA's Board of Governors has approved a vote for the league to explore bids and applicants for expansion teams exclusively in Las Vegas and Seattle, sources tell ESPN. A bidding process is expected to generate offers in the $7-10 billion range for each team.

The NBA has approved the exploration of expansion in Seattle and Las Vegas. Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff spoke last Friday on what the NBA’s return would mean to the city of Seattle. Bickerstaff was a sonics ball boy and spent childhood years there.

This starts the NBA's 32-team expansion process. Multiple high-ranking officials have termed expansion as "when, not if." Now the NBA will examine Seattle and Las Vegas bids over the next several months, and whether to execute the new franchise purchases now or in a few years.

Miami, a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, stuffed into a empanada, doused with hot sauce, and barreling down I-95 at 90mph in a Honda Civic in the emergency lane with the driver holding a couch balancing on the car roof in a driving rain storm with no turn signals.

The NBA as a league is worth over $200 billion, and that’s not factoring in media rights and ads. Next year’s cap isn’t decreasing, it’s increasing by ~ $11M to about $165M. And they just signed a $77B media rights deal. They’re doing just fine, but thanks for your concern.

I said 2 years ago the NBA will be irrelevant in America within 15 years. People laughed. But this is how it starts. First ratings decline, then fan interest declines, then local media revenue declines. You don’t lose cultural dominance overnight, you slowly become less relevant until it finally shows up in the business side all at once.
