@Dienne_7 All the time. Probably in most of my personal, ordinary interactions with everyday people. But the general personality traits, defensiveness, and investment in status quo among those in more elite professional spaces reverses this. In those spaces it's not the norm.

One of the great scandals of our time is that professional class liberals and institutions are so poorly educated about and organized around state repression that there has been almost no political cost for leading Democratic politicians consistently building authoritarian infrastructure.

For the vast bulk of ordinary people in this coalition, I think they are heavily propagandized and not that well informed and lacking rigorous mechanisms for defending their critical thinking capacities. I think it's actually that they are largely ignorant. This is not true for those in more elite spaces--such as journalists, political aides, etc. The latter groups tend to be more aware and directly culpable. But the base? I don't think it's lack of care/profit for most people.

@Dienne_7 It's not one thing. There are a range of different things going on. For some it's ignorance, for others willful blindness, for others its active/nefarious manipulation. It's important to understand the varying orientations within the professional class liberal ecosystem.

In my 2019 essay (from my first book Usual Cruelty) on how the bureaucracy of state repression functions--and the grotesque role of liberals in manufacturing consent for it--I explain with hundreds of examples what is going on here and why: yalelawjournal.org/forum/the-puni…

I don’t know if anyone will even care about what I’m saying now but the truth is harsher than any person can imagine. A large number of children in Gaza are being born with shocking deformities: open spine defects, severe heart abnormalities, missing limbs, deformed heads, and faces that look as if they were burned inside the womb. They come into the world already marked by the war before they even take their first breath. Mothers have been inhaling rocket gases and toxic smoke for months, drinking water contaminated with explosives residue, and living on soil saturated with toxins. I saw photos and videos myself of children in extremely difficult conditions unbearable to look at. Babies screaming in pain during their first hours of life, their tiny bodies horribly deformed. Doctors say they have never seen such cases in their entire lives, and they warn: “These deformities are unprecedented and will increase because of the pollution.” Here, we don’t just suffer from hunger and epidemics we are giving birth to an entire broken generation from the moment they are born. We live inside a giant prison, deprived of medicine, clean food, electricity, and even the basic right to have healthy children.

I typically don't focus on far-right lunatics. I think most thinking people can see what Fox News and Newsmax and various fascist podcasters are up to. She's very much in that category, and much worse than most given her appalling celebration of genocide. Her propaganda is very important, but it's not geared at the segment of the population I'm trying to reach. I don't know if this is the right approach, but I explain in the book why I focus on liberal institutions like Democrats, establishment liberal news, punditry, academia, philanthropy, etc. I think the work I do on that kind of propaganda is useful as well for addressing the even more crude and cynical stuff of people like her or Bari Weiss.

@equalityAlec Hi Alec, absolutely love your work, and wanted to ask if you've written yet about Olivia Reingold of the Free Press, who's been writing a cascade of harmful content aiming to discredit Community Violence Intervention programs and to promote armed policing. Thank you!

The trope that associates violent profiteering by elites and their henchmen with being “tough on crime” was pushed by both right wing and liberal media organizations for decades. It is one of the great achievements of modern propaganda to associate cruelty and domination and violence with “safety.” Trump saying today that the pope is “WEAK on crime” is extremely funny, but as with much of what Trump does, he also helps expose how baseless and cynical the liberal establishment has become. The major newspapers and tv channels of the United States have been filled with such unquestioned statements about nearly every evidence-based progressive attempt to reduce inequality and make our society less cruel and more safe. As I explained in Copaganda:

THREAD. This single headline in the NYT contains two outrageous claims reported as fact: 1) Vance "tried" to end the war; and 2) he "opposed" it. Neither is supported, but the thing to understand is: why is lying about the *intention* of powerful people so key to propaganda?

In this instance, it is egregious to rehabilitate a budding fascist politician as someone genuinely "trying" to end the war (what does such a claim even mean?), and even someone who "opposed" it. Recall: Vance spewed some of the most outrageous pro-war nonsense in recent weeks.

Dr. Alaa in Gaza 🇵🇸@2laa_kamal

I made a cup of coffee and sat down to revise for my 4th year finals — and suddenly, everything came flooding back. The last two and a half years. The bombs. The hunger. The displacement. The fear. The hospitals under attack. The universities destroyed. The training hospitals damaged. The healthcare system collapsing. The academic system collapsing. My professors killed. My colleagues and friends gone. I was a medical student… and a volunteer in hospitals while bombs fell around us. I kept studying while starving. I kept attending lectures while displaced. I kept going while everything around me was falling apart. There were days I couldn’t breathe from the weight of it all. Days I was broken. Depressed. Exhausted. Convinced I couldn’t carry any more. But then the Gazan spirit appeared. The one thing they can never destroy. We grieve. We break. We fall. Then we rise — like a phoenix from the ashes. Against every possible condition, I did something I never thought I could. I survived. I continued. I endured. I didn’t give up. Today, I’m still here. Stronger. More determined. Still fighting for my future. Still fighting for my people. Still choosing hope, even in the darkest time. This is not just resilience. This is Gaza. This is the spirit of Gaza. This is our resistance through life. This is how we survive.

Around 50,000 U.S. troops are deployed around the Middle East. If they file disability claims at the rate of the short 1990 Gulf War — 37% — this alone would add around $600 billion in costs over their lifetimes.

Israel ruthlessly carpet bombed Lebanon today, killing at least 180 people and injuring more than 800. How does the BBC report it? “Israel says it hit more than 100 command centres and military sites in 10 minutes…” This is how war crimes are laundered.
