Around the end of last year, I visited some political prisoners in one of the female prisons . During our conversation, they revealed that one of the inmates had been severely beaten while in handcuffs and later died. Her body, they said, was quietly taken away.
I have never stopped asking my self these questions: Where was her body taken? Was her family ever informed?
At the time, I couldn’t share this story publicly for fear that the inmates who spoke to me would face retaliation. I only confided in @AAgather, but there was little we could do.
This incident reminded me of a man I met in Luzira during the March to Parliament protests. He told me he had spent 27 years in prison and that many inmates die unnoticed. With no media access inside prisons, such cases often go unreported, allowing the system to quietly get away with the loss of lives.
So the question is; who holds prisons in Uganda accountable?
