If the value of the Canadian dollar and Mexican peso tumble against the dollar, then U.S. exports will become more expensive while Canadian and Mexican imports become cheaper, defeating Trump's goal of closing the trade deficit. Benny doesn't understand this, so he's celebrating.
Benny Johnson@bennyjohnson

Immediately following Trump's tariff announcement, the value of both the Canadian dollar and the Mexican peso are in freefall. Don’t mess with the United States of America.

If there is any doubt that the cost of the tariff is passed through to consumers, the price of propane (to heat my house) just went up by the amount of the tariff

Spoiler alert — even US military spending is only about 3.5 percent of GDP, and no, Trump will not raise it to 5 percent.

@saikatc @ArmandDoma Primarily, he’s looking for a pardon. In practice, that may also involve becoming a Republican or an independent, but it’s following from the first main cause.

The Fraternal Order of Police endorsed Trump for president. They congratulated him on his win in November. Here is what they had to say when I just asked them about Trump releasing HUNDREDS of violent felons who assaulted cops: "We don't have a statement about that."

Everything Price Sufferer (but especially eggs)
Every time a Republican loses in the future, a mob will try to violently overturn the results with the assurance that they'll be pardoned by the next Republican White House. But hey, he sits down for interviews!

@McCormackJohn Also consider the endorsements of just about every police union in this past election. They helped make this happen, and with their eyes wide open about it.

The remarkable thing about this story is that Biden was correct, and Mike Johnson was wrong: he did not sign an executive order pausing LNG exports to Europe, as Johnson claims. The US had $43 billion in LNG exports to Europe last year.
Bonchie@bonchieredstate

In which Mike Johnson recounts how Joe Biden had no idea he had “signed” an executive order dealing with LNG exports. This is crazy. We haven’t had a president the last four years. Just a shadowy cabal of handlers.

Nothing will make Donald Trump back down on his tariffs faster than cutting the flow of Canadian critical minerals to the US. If Trump hurts Canadian jobs and workers, Americans will hurt, too. Pierre Poilievre says he’ll do nothing. He doesn’t want to upset his backers — billionaires Elon Musk and Trump. They know he’s got billionaires’ backs, and working class Canadians will pay for it. It's time to fight for Canada and Canadian jobs.
