@sarahbobnelson @bencook_equity @Div_Addiction Yes, good point. And given the speed of online gambling and products like in-game sports betting (vs. pre-match/game sports betting) and online casino, this is certainly possible. If we had data on individual casino bets, we could examine this more fully!

@EricRLouderback @bencook_equity @Div_Addiction Hmm... following up on this and @bencook_equity 's question, what about losses within the session (or close within the time period) of the big win? I wonder if there were groups within the big winners who did and didn't experience them as big wins because of immediate losses?

@Div_Addiction Thanks for this question! When we talk about gambling "engagement", there is both a time and financial component. Here, we found that big wins increased both future time engagement (# of bets) AND financial engagement (amount of money wagered & lost).

Question for @EricRLouderback: Can you further explain the statement that there were significant effects of a big win on future elevated levels of engagement?

Question for @EricRLouderback: Do you think other types of gambling (e.g., casino games) might have different results than sports betting?

@icommhealth Very interesting evaluation with lots of important implications! How do you think schools could enhance outreach to parents who do not speak English to help with engagement in student learning outcomes?

@icommhealth @JalbertSarah This is such important and impactful work, and really helps highlight the complexities of outreach to the unhoused populations in Boston. How do you think helping reintegration of the formerly incarcerated might help reduce future overdose rates?

@bencook_equity @Div_Addiction Thanks for this interesting question, @bencook_equity! We didn't look at % for losses specifically, but we did find that big winners by both definitions had significantly higher net losses in the weeks after the BW when compared to controls.

@Div_Addiction @EricRLouderback I think you have done something close to this, but can you see what percentage of big winners went on to lose the money in their big win? Might be a simple way to make a point that big wins don't end up being big wins if they lead to problem gambling?

@Div_Addiction Great question! It is hard to make that jump to predicting the risk of or development of Gambling Disorder for people who experienced a big win due to a lack of data on that in our sample, but experiencing higher net losses following a big win could indicate financial harm.

Question for @EricRLouderback: Because the “Big Win” effect appears to dissipate over time, can these results be seen as in support of Custer’s theory that a big win can lead to Gambling Disorder?

@CMC_CHA @JoeRosansky @okst_kayley Do you think virtually delivered programs such as this one might differ in effectiveness when compared to in-person programs? Has there been any research on different modalities of mindfulness delivery on mental health outcomes?

@CMC_CHA @MichaelDatko Fascinating poster and findings! Do you think these results for mindfulness would replicate with other mental health disorders with similar etiologies, or are they limited to anxiety and depression?

@MegSciWriter @Div_Addiction Thanks, @MegSciWriter! That's a great question. Responsible gambling strategies could include setting a budget, viewing gambling as entertainment (instead of as a way to make money), and using limit-setting features if they're available.

@Div_Addiction Thanks for this great question! That is exactly what we did. We used matched-pair analysis to match big winners & matched controls w/ similar characteristics, & then used paired t-tests to compare their # of bets placed, amount wagered and net loss for 24 weeks after the big win.
