For centuries, paleontologists have had to rely on intuition re whether reconstructed joint poses "look right." Today in @NatureComms: we created a way to formalize & test that intuition, & discovered that articular surface interactions distinguish locomotor poses in dinosaurs 🧵

(4/5) An interesting revelation: traits promoting high shoulder mobility aren't always the same as those enabling overhead positions. Non-human apes have enhanced overhead capability without high mobility 🦍, but humans have high mobility with less overhead capability 🙋‍♀️.

Why do YOU think the arch recoils? Our new study in @FrontBioeng uses high-speed x-ray to show that arch recoil is critical to propulsion because it orients the ankle upright. Arch recoil increases contact time, likely to generate propulsive ankle power more efficiently. 1/5
