TLDR: Bit of a rant from me about the structural hypocrisy that is X algorithm.
Recently X has been marking my works as sensitive media and I'm a bit frustrated to say the least.
If you've been an artist on this platform for a while, you probably experienced this fatigue yourself, the seemingly omnipotent double standard where you work on an artwork for several days and post it on X only to find it's been marked as sensitive media and buried on the timeline, effectively killing the engagement. Either this or the invisible engagement throttle system which doesn't outwardly mark your posts as sensitive content but still affects your engagement nonetheless so the artwork you've been working on for days gets buried without reaching half your normal audience.
Meanwhile the platform consistently push visibility on AI slop that takes a press of a button to generate, making it harder for artists to compete on the platform. Isn't it ironic that X claims to heavily promote original content and encourages users to post original content on X, yet what I see every time I open this app is AI content these days, the utter hypocrisy is sickening. Every day I see less art from art accounts I used to follow, my feed is more AI than actual artist which makes me wonder if I'm also being actively silenced by the algorithm.
And speaking of the X algorithm, I don't understand why they have so much updates on the algorithm. It's probably had more frequent balancing patches and updates than Street Fighter 6 which is really saying something. As much as I'd like to say I don't care about it, unfortunately I do. Because it largely affects everything that matters to me be it engagement, people enjoying my art, and my personal enjoyment of seeing everyone enjoy what I create.
Over the years I've tried my best to comply as much as I can to this platform's hypocritical algorithm, and to certain extent I like to think I'd found a good balance so my engagement is still decent and I have returning fans that enjoys my works. But the recent algorithm and the sensitive media flags (and the engagement throttle as a result) is not only killing my engagement but it's also affecting my morale for the foreseeable future. For those of you reading all this, you might brush it off as me having a crashout moment but personally it feels like the platform is outright denying my efforts as a creator, all the hours I put into the artwork buried in mere seconds under countless AI slop as numerous as the stars in the night sky.
Not only that, sometimes it honestly feels like the algorithm has a double standard bias against certain creators be it AI slop or not. Initially I thought that the algorithm simply looks out for high concentration of skin tone pixels to detect whether a post requires sensitive media flag or not but when I look at certain creators out there, it seems like some of their riskier content bypass this invisible hands of fate altogether as if they're armed with a get out of jail free card. For example, when the AI slop creators post risky content that I would never dare post myself, not only are they rewarded with great exposure they never seem to get the same penalties I've been fighting for years. Rules are not applied uniformly across every user and there's no single yes or no trigger for sensitive media as it seems to come down to a probability score where if a post hits a certain threshold of probability of sensitive score, it gets labeled. The BS doesn't end there, as it looks like everyone has a different threshold required to trigger the flag and there is no way for any of us to monitor what this threshold is nor do we have a clear outline of what we should do or avoid.
Yes, it's effectively BS how there's no public transparency, no trust score I can view and no real time notification on when my reach is being throttled or why it's being throttled. The only notifications I get are the notification from X telling me my post got a warning (nice gentle way of saying my post got Sensitive Media tag and engagement got killed immediately) because the algorithm thinks it's a sensitive content and if I think it's a mistake, I can appeal. But when I send in an Appeal it falls on deaf ears, assuming it even reaches an actual human employee at X. I must have sent in countless appeals whenever I get such notices but I never hear back, my posts remain invisible/marked sensitive content and I'm left wondering if the next F5 will show me the correspondence from X.
Reading through my own rant, I can totally see some people might be thinking how ungrateful I am or that they would love to be in my shoes instead or that I'm petty for even ranting about this, but when the platform's own tools are effectively working against what I do, it just leaves me with a feeling of helplessness. I mean really, what else can you do other than say suck it up and continue drawing? Hoping the next post of my artwork won't face the same penalties?
Can you imagine my creative thought process?
Instead of simply thinking, oh hey I wonder what fun art I should make today, I'm often thinking I wonder what I can make today that will be fun but also appease the RNG algorithm so my hours of hard work isn't wasted.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't affected because it affects my motivation and creativity, sitting behind the canvas worrying what would less likely go get me silenced when I have no idea what my threshold is.
Given the headache and BS I need to deal with on this platform, I'm still going to push on and continue drawing what I find fun, I just can't see myself quitting art but I still felt the need to vent out my frustrations that I'd harbored privately for years.
For anyone who read the whole thing, thank you. Though, given the recent algorithm behavior I have a feeling not many people will even see this on their timeline, which is ironic.
If anyone can offer genuine advice on my current problems and predicament, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could share some advice.

BE INFORMED ABOUT PLATFORMS YOU USE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT INVOLVES YOUR MONEY!
Yes, it is against PayPal's ToS to charge an extra specifically for "PayPal fee"
> "No surcharges: You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method." (PayPal Terms)
Basically, no PayPal specific surcharge: you cant say "$50 + $3.50 PayPal fee" or add a line item explicitly tied to PayPal usage.
This is why it could be dangerous for artists to display the extra fee like this since it's a breach In PayPal's agreement, therefore your account could be at risk should they see it. If your PayPal acc gets banned, chances are you can say bye to your money.
Many people charge PayPal fees and never have any problems, but better be safe than sorry especially when you can just up the price. It's silly to be so adamant on charging an extra.
I also think it's dishonest to charge this fee anyways because the display price will be lower. You can just up your base price to include the fees, just like any seller does.

Btw, making your client pay PayPal fee is against PayPal's ToS!
